As a part of the Japan-exclusive “Only On Netflix” event, the streaming giant revealed some of the props from its One Piece live-action adaptation series, set to premiere sometime this year. The event is set to be held from Saturday, May 20, to Sunday, June 11, in Harajuku, Tokyo, giving fans of the anime and manga series plenty of time to check out the display.

The One Piece live-action adaptation is one of the most highly-anticipated Netflix-produced series of the year, set to potentially provide a new influx of fans for the anime and manga. For those who are already fans of author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s anime and manga series, the biggest concern is how faithful and high-quality the adaptation will be.

While there are plenty of boxes to tick in this area, the props displayed at the Only On Netflix event are encouraging. Although fans will find out for sure by the end of this year whether or not the One Piece live-action series can live up to the hype, this latest prop reveal at least confirms efforts are being made in all the right places.

“Only On Netflix” puts One Piece live-action’s rendition of Luffy’s straw hat and hand-drawn jolly roger on display

The One Piece live-action props displayed at the Only On Netflix event are arguably two of the more significant ones that will be seen in the series’ first season. This includes Luffy’s straw hat, which will debut at the beginning of the season, and Luffy’s hand-drawn jolly roger, which will first appear during the show’s rendition of the Syrup Village arc.

While fans likely remember the hand-drawn jolly roger from its appearance on the forehead of Laboon, it actually first appears shortly after the Straw Hats are given the Going Merry. Thankfully, Usopp is able to redraw the design to the one which fans know and love today, as well as the one which is still used by the Straw Hats in the contemporary series.

Although merely a crumb of information for the upcoming adaptation series, it’s nevertheless an important highlight of how faithful and high-quality the adaptation appears to be. One encouraging aspect of these props which suggests this is the choice to essentially transplant the exact drawing of Luffy’s jolly roger from the anime and manga onto the live-action flag.

While this may seem a subtle and inconsequential choice, it’s one on which fans will undoubtedly base the quality of the adaptation. The commotion around the choice to have a more realistic figurehead for the Going Merry perfectly demonstrates this. Thankfully, these latest prop reveals will likely be encouraging rather than somewhat divisive amongst fans.
