ARCHAEOLOGISTS excavating the City of David National Park in Israel have unearthed a grotesque-looking oil lamp, dating the unusual lucky charm to the first century AD. The 2,000-year-old artefact was exposed during recent excavations along the ancient “pilgrim road” leading through the city of Jerusalem. Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) found the lamp while digging through the foundations of a building along the route, believing it was deposited there on purpose. According to Ari Levy and Dr Yuval Baruch of the IAA, the lamp may have acted as a lucky charm of sorts, intended to bring good fortune to the occupants of…

When the hyena saw the python was going to devour an antelope, it reacted quickly and prodded the snake until it released the victim. While on a safari in the Okavango Delta of Bᴏᴛsᴡᴀɴᴀ, Mike Sutherland captured film of a hyena and a python competing for prey. He reported that they encountered many young impalas along the way, some of which were just a few days or perhaps hours old. Sutherland claimed that a large herd of antelopes was relaxing on the edge of the mudflat while a hyena was off in the distance. From a massive gourd tree covered…
These lovely juvenile elephants are exhausted from splashing around in the mud and are slouched ᴄʟᴏsᴇ to each other. Photographer Annie Laing, 64, captured photographs of elephants having fun in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ’s Eastern Cape’s Addo Elephant National Park. In October, Annie, a visitor from Colchester, Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ, went to the park on a hot day when she was aware that the animals would be looking for water. She was happy to share photos of the playful and cheeky baby elephants because they are well-known for being playful and cheeky. The elephants’ layer of protection from the sun and insect stings…
A mother African squirrel who fought off a large, ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs cobra to save her young in a viral video displayed incredible bravery. A Cape cobra in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ’s Kruger National Park lunges at a much smaller Cape ground squirrel in the two-minute film, forcing the latter to retreat a short distance. The small rodent strangely decided to wrestle with the big yellow snake instead of ducking its head and fleeing, which made one of the videographers comment that he wouldn’t win against this. The courageous squirrel swiftly parried the snake’s blows intended to disgrace him. Even though she was biting…

A 1,300-square-foot mosaic uncovered in Syria depicting scenes of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict that took place between the ancient Greeks and the people of Troy more than 2,000 years ago, is the ‘rarest’ ever to be found due to how remarkably intact it is. The stunning Roman-era artwork, constructed 1,600 years ago, is adorned with soldiers carrying swords and shields, along with their names, and images of fierce Amazons who fought alongside the people of Troy. The mosaic is the latest to be found in Rastan in northern Syria’s Homs district, which the government seized back from rebels…
Scientists found about 20 large 80-million-year-old dinosaur eggs when they unearthed a titanosaur nesting site in Brazil. The dinosaur egg nest, which dates back to the Cretaceous period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago, was discovered in an abandoned limestone mine in the rural area of Ponte Alta, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Joao Ismael da Silva, a paleontology technician at the Federal University of Triangular Mineiro Ivor Price Paleontological Research Center, made the discovery in the 1990s, but the results of the analysis of the fossilized eggs have just been published. Researcher Joao Ismael da…
Archeologists in Mexico have unearthed an altar complete with a pot containing human remains that they say was part of a ritual to mark the fading world of the indigenous Mexica after Spanish conquest. The discovery took place near what is now Garibaldi Plaza in Mexico City. Between 1521 and 1610, which is when the altar and pot are believed to have been made, the city was called Tenochtitlan. A team of experts from the National Institute of Anthropology and History confirmed that the location of the discovery was once the home of a Mexica family. In the property of…
The stuff of nightmares if bought to life, a giant millipede’s fossil was found at a scenic beach in the north of England. The remains of Arthropleura, the biggest invertebrate ever known to exist, were discovered about 40 miles north of Newcastle in Northumberland. As big as a car, the creature was even bigger than the previous record-holder, the ancient sea scorpion. A fossil segment about 30 inches long led experts to estimate that the entire millipede was about 9 feet long and weighed more than 100 pounds. “It was an incredibly exciting find, but the fossil is so large…

Tutankhamun, the boy king of ancient Egypt, came to power only after two of his sisters jointly held the throne, according to an Egyptologist at Canada’s Universite du Quebec a Montreal. Researchers have known for more than half a century that a queen had reigned before Tutankhamun, whose intact tomb was discovered in 1922, sparking global interest in Egyptology. Some thought she was Nefertiti, the sister and wife of Akhenaten, who proclaimed herself ‘king’ following his death. Others believed it to be the eldest daughter Princess Meritaten. In the enigmatic culture of the Maya people, Jade took up a special place, crafted into elaborate trinkets rich with ancient meaning and lore. But this precious stone was not meant for decorative or ornamental finery. Jade – in the form of its mineral variety, jadeite – also seems to have had its uses in the toil of manual labour, even among the grinding backdrop of long-ago salt works. Such an unbelievably well-preserved jadeite gouge tool and its handle were discovered by scientists from the Louisiana State University on the grounds of what was once an ancient Mayan salt work in Belize.…

Kudu are extremely shrewd and difficult to approach. They produce a harsh alarm bark when they sense danger, frequently using their huge, radar-like ears, and then rush away in a characteristic rocking-horse gait, the male laying back his horns to avoid overhead obstacles. An adult bull kudu’s horns have two and a half twists and, if straightened, would be around 120 cm long. Although they rarely contain three complete twists, the longest known example is 187.64 cm. The bull’s horns don’t start to develop until they are between 6 and 12 months old, twisting once at about 2 years old,…
