Chelsea’s torrid recent spell has reached peak embarrassment after Kai Havertz conceded a penalty by punching the ball in the box during the Blues’ FA Cup third round clash with Manchester City
Chelsea star Kai Havertz absolutely gifted Manchester City a goal after bizarrely ‘Superman punching’ the ball in the box to concede a daft penalty during their FA Cup third clash at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The German forward was leaping to challenge Aymeric Laporte while defending a corner when the ball cannoned off his outstretched fist. Referee Rob Jones didn’t notice it at first, but was quickly called over to the monitors by VAR once play had stopped, and almost immediately pointed to the spot.
Julian Alvarez duly converted the penalty to put City 2-0 up, as Chelsea supporters and rival fans alike went in hard on Havertz on social media.
“What on Earth is Havertz doing?? That was a Superman punch,” one supporter tweeted.
“Why did Havertz literally punch the ball? His head was right there haha,” commented another, while a third wrote: “Havertz is a joke, what the f*** was that?”
Another Blues fan joked: “Stick Havertz in goal I’ve never seen Kepa punch the ball away as commandingly as that before.”
Minutes earlier, Riyad Mahrez had given City the lead via a deflected, but admittedly well-hit, free-kick, and Phil Foden made it 3-0 shortly after to leave Graham Potter’s side in a complete mess heading into the break.
Although his squad has been decimated by injuries in recent weeks, defeat here will be the club’s fifth in seven matches, and while Potter insists he isn’t worried about losing his job, history tells us few Chelsea managers survive such terrible runs of form.
