Kepa Arrizabalaga’s goalkeeping for Manchester City’s opener was so bad that fans accused him of “match fixing”.
After an eventful first half at Stamford Bridge, things soon livened up and City went 1-0 up as substitutes Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez combined.
Grealish found space down the left and put in a teasing left-footed cross that picked out for Mahrez for a tap-in at the far post.
But while it was tidy play from a City perspective, fans could not understand what on earth Kepa was doing.
The cross didn’t have too much pace on it and was in the Spaniard’s vicinity and yet he let the ball run. Marc Cucurella went to sleep and Chelsea were punished.
Kepa really didn’t cover himself in glory and fans came out with match fixing shouts.
One fan vented: “Investigate kepa for match fixing cause I really can’t get my head around that.”
Another fumed: “We just witnessed Kepa match fixing but we’re gonna blame potter after the game aren’t we.”
A third commented: “Did Kepa just choose not to claim that? Is he match fixing?”
A fourth said: “Investigate Kepa for match fixing bc wtf was that.”
A fifth added: “Did Kepa just choose not to claim that? Is he match fixing? I’m baffled.”
Another opined: “Kepa match fixing or what? That might be the worst leave I’ve ever ever seen.”
Kepa, a £71 million signing from Athletic Bilbao, appears to have got the nod over Edouard Mendy at the moment but his decision-making when it mattered this evening wasn’t great at all.
Chelsea remain tenth in the league after a sixth defeat of the campaign.
City, meanwhile, have five points behind league leaders Arsenal after picking up a 1-0 win in west London.
On Tuesday Mikel Arteta’s men dropped points at home to third-placed Newcastle, who held them to a 0-0 draw.
City and Chelsea meet for the third time this season on Sunday in an FA Cup tie, having also locked horns in the Carabao Cup.
