Peter Overton of Channel Nine recalls the memorable time when actor and celebrity Tom Cruise cut him off.

When Cruise, 59, was being questioned by Overton for 60 Minutes in 2005, a confrontation had place.

After the seasoned reporter questioned the divisive actor about his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, the controversial actor from Top Gun ended up looking down Overton.

‘That was a hell of an interview, I’ll never forget it,’ Overton, 56, said, reflecting on the incident on the 9Honey site on Friday.

During the chat, Cruise angrily told Overton to ‘put your manners back in’.

The outburst came after the 60 Minutes star asked Cruise to answer a series of personal questions about Kidman, who he had divorced four years earlier.

Overton’s questions included asking Cruise about whether he considered Kidman, ‘the love his life’ and the nature of the their post-divorce relationship.

‘I held my own and I was happy about that,’ Overton told the publication.

‘I didn’t change, that’s who I am. I thought they were fair questions.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Overton says he does not bare any ‘ill will’ against the box-office megastar.

‘It was just one of those interviews that perhaps didn’t pan out as everyone thought it would.’

Overton also admitted that he was a fan of the superstar and described his latest blockbuster, Top Gun Maverick as ‘fantastic’, and Cruise as ‘brilliant’ in it.

It comes after the interview went viral in May, 17 years after it first aired.

Tweeted by @responsiblerob the explosive interview was viewed more than 2.1 million times in one week.

In the interview, Cruise can be seen growing flustered after Overton asked: ‘Is Nicole the love of your life?’

Cruise then challenged the reporter: ‘What do you mean, Peter? How do you answer that question?’

Then when Overton asked what sort of relationship the former couple still had, Cruise lost his cool, telling the Nine reporter, ‘You’re stepping over the line now. You’re stepping over the line, and you know you are.’

He then stared coolly at Overton, until the journalist explained, ‘I suppose they’re questions that people want to know…’.

However Cruise cut him off, saying, ‘Peter. Peter. You want to know. Take responsibility for what you want to know.’

‘So, I’m just telling you right now, okay, just put your manners back in.’

The clip ended with a quick apology from Overton.
