Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is in such hot goalscoring form that he’s now hit the back of the net more times this season than the entire team of one of City’s title rivals.
Erling Haaland has scored more Premier League goals this season than Chelsea’s entire team.
The frighteningly-prolific Norwegian picked up from where he left off before the World Cup break by bagging a brace as Manchester City steamrolled past Leeds at Elland Road last night, bringing his tally to 20 league goals after just 14 appearances.
Graham Potter’s Chelsea, who have (or had, at least) ambitions of winning the title, lest we forget, have scored just 19, with their top scorer, Kai Havertz, registering a measly-by-comparison four league goals so far.
Haaland’s ravenous form is antithetical of Chelsea’s struggles in front of goal – which have been plaguing the side more-or-less since Diego Costa departed in 2017.
Since then, the Blues have brought in a series of high-profile strikers, including Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, only to see them all fall flat on their face.
Mason Mount finished last season as the club’s leading Premier League scorer with 11 goals, and the season before that Jorginho’s seven-goal haul was enough to take top spot.
The London club, who tried to sign Haaland in 2021, have attempted to remedy the problem by sealing a summer move for RB Leipzig hotshot Christopher Nkunku, and they could well bring in a striker in the January transfer window too following Armando Broja’s season-ending ACL injury.
Meanwhile, City boss Pep Guardiola says he doesn’t expect to bring any players in next month, despite the fact the club are trying to close the gap on Arsenal, who are five points clear at the top of the league at the moment.
