Manchester United owners the Glazers are preparing a parting insult for Erik ten Hag

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reliant on the Glazers when it comes to transfer backing at Old Trafford.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants a new striker to join the club when the transfer window reopens next month. However, with the Red Devils only able to sign players on loan, it’s clear he’s being let down. The Glazers are penny-pinching once again and, with the Americans reluctant to spend any more money as they look to sell the club, their stance is an insult to everybody associated with it.

Manchester United lost Cristiano Ronaldo last month, terminating the veteran’s contract in the wake of his controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

And the Red Devils know they need a replacement for the 37-year-old as they look to return to the Champions League following their absence from the competition this year.

Ten Hag reinforced the desire to strengthen his attack after United beat Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night. He said: “We are looking for offensive players, we are looking for a striker.

“It would be good because of all the games coming, we are playing every third day and it is tough.

“I think we are always in the market, but it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria.

“We do what we can to bring in any player we can. For the progress of the team, we need to be more clinical.”

Ten Hag, however, won’t dare criticise the owners in public – like predecessors Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes before him.

But, at a time where United are ticking along nicely, it’s abundantly clear the 52-year-old is working with one arm tied behind his back.

Yes, the Glazers gave the Dutchman significant backing in the summer – with Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka all arriving.

But in order to give United the best possible chance of qualifying for the Champions League, funds have to be released.

Some of the fees being quoted aren’t exactly extortionate, either. Take Joao Felix for example, a player believed to be United’s radar.

It would take an overall investment of close to £16million to land the Portugal international on a temporary basis, with Atletico Madrid open to letting him leave on loan.

But while that’s high for a loan deal, Felix is a generational talent. His arrival would give the squad a boost, while broadening the options available to Ten Hag.

The Glazers have, over the years, been reluctant to spend big.

For the first few years of their rule, Sir Alex Ferguson was able to keep waving his magic wand to keep the trophies coming at Old Trafford.

For the first few years of their rule, Sir Alex Ferguson was able to keep waving his magic wand to keep the trophies coming at Old Trafford.

But, in the time since, they’ve often failed whichever manager rules the roost – from Moyes to Van Gaal, Mourinho to Solskjaer.

At a time where United are finally starting to resemble a proper team again, the Glazers won’t open their pursestrings. In their eyes, they did enough of that back in the summer.

This wouldn’t happen at Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola is able to get just about any player he wants with a click of his fingers.

Likewise at Chelsea, with Todd Boehly spending big in the summer – even if a few of the club’s signings have failed to settle.

Yet that hasn’t stopped them from investing, with Cody Gakpo moving to Anfield having previously been expected to join United instead.

For too long, United have been restricted by the Glazers – something that has undoubtedly caused their decline.

And when they eventually pack their suitcases and leave, from the other side of the pond, the club and Ten Hag will be all the better for it.
