Victor Wembanyama is all set to suit up for the Spurs in the upcoming season after they won the lottery pick, and it so happens that the franchise has an interesting bit of history alongside the development.
Per an eagle-eyed Redditor, the Spurs have landed the No. 1 overall draft pick every time they finished their season under .300. There have been three seasons when they have hit under the number — 1988, 1996, and 2022.
And each season, they landed the No. 1 picks. It started with David Robinson. The second instance was when they drafted Tim Duncan, and now they have Wembanyama.
It’s also worth noting that Robinson and Duncan have been regarded as the greatest players in Spurs history. Together with Gregg Popovich and David Robinson, Duncan led the side to their first title in 1999 and then laid the foundation for five more titles over the next 15 years.
Now, in Wembanyama, the Spurs have a generational talent fully capable of taking the franchise back to its glory days.
Victor Wembanyama Wants To Win A Ring With The San Antonio Spurs
Soon after it was announced that the Spurs had won the lottery, Wembanyama, in an interview with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, outlined his goal with the Spurs.
“My heart’s beating. I got everyone I love around me,” Wembanyama told Brian Windhorst. “It’s really a special moment I’m gonna remember for the rest of my life. … I’m gonna make everything to win as many games as possible. I’m trying to win a ring ASAP, so be ready.”
The Spurs can surely use an asset in Wembanyama. They have a young and dynamic core comprising Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, Devin Vassell, and Jeremy Sochan. However, they will look to make some upgrades to the roster that sees the unit stake a berth for the playoffs. The NBA is a strange place and only time will tell if San Antonio might land a veteran name to assist Wemby.
