Bruno Fernandes sends a message to not just focus on the mistake by David de Gea in the West Ham defeat
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has sent a message to not just focus on the mistake made by David de Gea in the defeat to West Ham United.
The Hammers beat the Red Devils by a solitary goal by Said Benrahma. The Algerian’s strike was a harmless one, but de Gea somehow managed to make a meal of it and let the ball into the back of the net.
United huffed and puffed for an equaliser but never looked like scoring. That’s two consecutive away games now without a goal scored. As a result of dropping six points in the space of four days, Erik ten Hag’s men have allowed Liverpool back into the top-four race, something did not seem possible a couple of weeks ago.
Here’s Fernandes on not focusing on de Gea’s mistake and being concerned by the lack of goals (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“We are not capable of scoring a goal, we create so many chances but not ruthless enough. We conceded an unlucky goal and lost the game. I have to see it back but we don’t need to focus on that [De Gea mistake].
“He has been saving us so many times so doesn’t have to take the blame for the result. It is probably one of our worst seasons on scoring goals. We have people capable of scoring goals but we are not taking our chances.”
As much as it is commendable for the Portuguese international to come out and protect de Gea, not sure he is right about the team creating loads of chances and only failing to convert them.
In the last two games, the attack has looked leggy, bereft of ideas and it seems like they are playing reactive football rather than proactive.
Erik ten Hag would want to work on this aspect before the final four games of the league campaign. If Liverpool win all of their games, United have to win three of the four games to secure a top-four finish.
