Kylian Mbappe scored one of the season’s most bizarre goals after capitalising on a mistake from Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo, but his controversial effort was not enough to prevent PSG from falling to a 3-1 defeat.
The PSG superstar equalised in the 29th minute of the Ligue 1 match at the Parc des Princes, after the hosts fell behind to Enzo le Fee and then had Achraf Hakimi sent off.
Mvogo believed Lorient had been awarded a free kick after Mbappe had tussled with a defender in the penalty area.
The goalkeeper opted to roll the ball out in preparation to take a free kick, with Mbappe walking alongside him.
Mbappe quickly reacted by dribbling the ball away from the goalkeeper and passing into the empty net.
Lorient players appealed against Mbappe’s goal being awarded by referee Jerome Brisard
Mbappe’s controversial goal was unable to prevent leaders PSG from suffering a home defeat
Lorient players immediately surrounded referee Jerome Brisard to protest the goal, with the official waving away protests having not awarded Lorient a free kick.
The visitors were able to put the controversial goal behind them to claim a shock win against the Ligue 1 leaders.
Darlin Yongwa restored Lorient’s lead before half-time, with Bamba Dieng sealing a 3-1 victory in the closing minutes of the match.
The result saw PSG’s lead at the top of the table cut to five points, after second placed Marseille beat Auxerre 2-1.
Lorient moved into the top half with their shock win over the reigning French champions.
Mbappe’s strike has earned comparisons to a famous goal scored by Nani for Manchester United in 2010 against Tottenham.
Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes had similarly believed his side had been awarded a free-kick, with Nani having been accused of handling the ball.
The Portugal winger then rolled the ball into the net in one of the strangest goals in Premier League history.
