Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson cleared up an old rumor on the April 18 episode of Paltrow’s “The Goop” podcast.
During their chat, the Goop founder revealed to her Marvel costar that they were rumored to have had a feud during the filming of “Iron Man 2.” This came as news to Johansson who had nothing but good things to say about working with Paltrow for the first time.
“People ask me, ‘is it true that you and Scarlett Johansson didn’t get along on Iron Man?'” Paltrow revealed to a shocked Johansson. The “Black Widow” star was quick to let her friend know that she felt nothing but support from her during their time working together on the 2010 film.
Johansson responded, “Is that a rumor? You were so nice to me on that movie. I was so petrified. You were so nice to me! You could’ve been awful. I was so out of my comfort zone on that movie. I’d never done anything like that before. Plus, you had established such deep friendships.”
For her part, Paltrow shared she was “psyched” to have Johansson join the cast. “I was so happy to have another woman around,” she explained. That’s a sentiment Johansson understood all too well during her time in the early, male-dominated days of the MCU.
“You kept telling me that,” Johansson said. “Then I experienced that later on. When I did ‘Avengers,’ I was one of the few [women] . . . it was like a big sausage party.”
This isn’t the first time Paltrow has dispelled rumors of a feud with Johansson. Way back in 2010, she found herself answering questions about her working relationship with her new “Iron Man 2” costar at a party in New York. In an interview with People, she made it clear that the rumors simply weren’t true.
“People tell me, ‘Oh you had a fight,'” she said. “They’re pitting you against each other and I just think, why do we need to make a problem between women?”
Paltrow continued, “I adore Scarlett. I loved having her on set. She is really funny. She swears a lot. She has a dirty sense of humor. She loves to cook. She’s like a girl after my own heart.”
