Casemiro was spotted laughing after the final whistle as Manchester United were dumped out of the Europa League in humiliating fashion by Sevilla on Thursday night.
Manchester United star Casemiro has left supporters fuming after appearing to smile as he left the pitch following their humiliating defeat to Sevilla on Thursday.
The Red Devils travelled to Spain for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash but were totally outclassed by their hosts. Goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Loic Badé saw Sevilla complete a 5-2 win on aggregate against Erik ten Hag’s side, who’s European trophy drought will extend into a seventh year.
But it was the actions of Casemiro after the game that most infuriated supporters, with the former Real Madrid star seen laughing after the final whistle. The midfielder had put in one of his worst performances since joining United last summer and left fans furious with his attitude to United being knocked out.
One supporter tweeted: “Why the f*** is Casemiro smiling I don’t know what there is to smile about.” Another added: “Casemiro is going to get pelters ( rightly so ) for laughing and smiling after that woeful and abject @ManUtd performance.”
A third said: “Casemiro laughing with the ref right after that dreadful performance?! Clearly not as gutted as the fans standing in the terrace who’ve paid a fortune to watch that shambles!” A fourth added: “Casemiro laughing with the Ref seconds after the final whistle says everything about the attitude of this group of mainly average players.”
Some are even calling for the Brazilian to be dropped from United’s starting line-up. One fan fumed: “Casemiro should be a bench player next season. If you have eyes you will know.”
United’s performance in Spain was limp, with a series of costly errors from David de Gea proving to be their downfall. Casemiro also struggled, winning just one tackle and only 50 per cent of his defensive duels, as well as being dribbled past three times and being booked.
Former Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes took no prisoners with his assessment of the visitors’ awful performance. He blasted Ten Hag’s men for failing to handle the atmosphere created by the Sevilla home crowd.
“Look, it was a difficult night. They didn’t handle the aggression and the passion of Sevilla. I think Manchester United are still a better team than them but it’s difficult to say that tonight,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“When you come to these places you expect to take an example from your experienced players, and right from the first minute David de Gea, he kicks the ball out and from then on he’s a nervous wreck. This is one of your most experienced, top, Spanish goalkeepers, in his home country, you don’t expect that type of thing.
“They just couldn’t handle the aggression of a brilliant Sevilla team tonight. If you look over the two games, the two own goals they gave away and two calamitous goals here tonight, it’s been a disaster of a quarter final.
“We always mention the history of this club – I said it before and I’ll it again, Manchester United are a better team than these but tonight they were out-fought, out-played, lacked the ability to take the ball, were so sloppy on the ball and lacked aggression in their own play.”
