Nicolas Cage has never shied away from his love of comic books, and in a recent AMA, he revealed a comic role book role he would love to play is Spectre at DC. It certainly seems like a fitting choice for the actor, who has played supernatural heroes in the past. Instagram user clements.ink recently gave us a glimpse of what this might look like with a recent post, which you can check out below:
If Nicolas Cage ends up getting his wish and plays Spectre in the future, that would probably bring him some closure for his missed opportunity at DC years ago. At one time, Cage was on board to play Superman with Tim Burton directing and Kevin Smith writing the script. Unfortunately, this move never materialized, so we were all left wondering what could have been.
Nicolas Cage would get to play another superhero later on, though it wasn’t quite Spectre, and it wasn’t at DC. Everyone remembers when Cage donned a leather jacket to play Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, for Marvel. He would play the character twice in 2007’s Ghost Rider and 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Nicolas Cage hasn’t had a chance to play a DC role like Spectre since his missed Superman opportunity, but he did basically get to play Batman in the off-kilter superhero film Kick-Ass. Cage played the brutal superhero Big Daddy, who was quite a bit more murderous than Batman. Still, his costume, demeanor, and fighting skills certainly called to mind the caped crusader.
Nicolas Cage may not get to play Spectre in the near future, but he did recently star in an Oscar-winning superhero film when he voiced Spider-Man Noir in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, it looks like Cage won’t be back for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but he definitely left his mark on the franchise. Who knows, maybe he’ll make a surprise appearance, and they’re just keeping it under wraps?
We should definitely never say never about Nicolas Cage playing Spectre or some other great role at DC, considering James Gunn is now in charge of the future of the DCU. Gunn is definitely savvy when it comes to his casting decisions, and he could probably find the perfect role for Cage in his upcoming ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters’ phase of the DCU. There are plenty of films and TV shows on the way from the comic-book giant, so there’s sure to be something that Cage could sink his teeth into.
In the meantime, we’ll get to see Nicolas Cage sink his pointed teeth into a very different undead character who isn’t quite as heroic as Spectre. Cage is starring as the classic horror monster Count Dracula opposite Nicolas Hoult in the film Renfield, which is set to hit theaters on April 14. The film follows Nicolas Hoult’s titular assistant to Dracula, who wants to strike out on his own and see what life might be like outside of the eternal vampire’s employ.
