Manchester United fans have suggested Scott McTominay should play as a striker after the midfielder’s two goals helped Scotland earn a shock victory over Spain in Euro 2024 qualifying.
McTominay scored a goal in each half as Scotland secured a memorable 2-0 win at Hampden Park to take control of Group A.
The 26-year-old ended the international break with four six in two matches, following his brace in Scotland’s 3-0 win over Cyprus.
His goalscoring form surprised Manchester United fans, with the midfielder having scored 18 goals in his 202 appearances for the Red Devils.
With loanee forward Wout Weghorst having scored just twice since joining from Burnley in January, some supporters claimed McTominay play further forward for Erik ten Hag’s side.
‘Scott Mctominay should start as the striker over Wout Weghorst,’ one fan tweeted, with another commenting ‘Scott McTominay is a better No. 9 than Wout Weghorst.’
‘I actually want to see McTominay get given a chance at ST now,’ a third fan posted. ‘Think about it, he can do everything that Weghorst can but at a quicker rate. His finishing ability can’t be any worse either.’
‘Scott McTominay playing as a striker is surprising fans. For some strange reason,’ another added.
‘SCOTT MCTOMINAY THE BEST STRIKER IN THE WORLDDD,’ posted another fan.
McTominay had previously played further forward for Manchester United’s youth teams, including as a centre forward.
The Scotland star was then converted into a defensive midfielder by Jose Mourinho.
McTominay said post match he likes to push forward and believes he can add more goals to his game.
‘As a kid, I was an attacking midfielder, then I became more of a sitting midfield player,’ McTominay said. ‘But I like to do both, I like to get in the box but I also like to help my team-mates defend as well.
‘For me, I’ve got to keep doing that, I know I can add more goals and assists to my game, and I think the last two games are a good example of that.’
