Jason Momoa shares an interesting update on his future as Aquaman in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, and it impacts his chances to play Lobo.
Jason Momoa just gave an update on his Aquaman future in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Momoa is one of the actors from the old DCEU that is expected to make the jump to the new version of DC that is soon arriving at the big screen. Gunn and Safran have announced the first 10 projects that kick off their new DC Universe, which will start after this year’s The Flash resets the DC Universe. While there has been talk about Momoa playing Lobo in the new DC Universe, the actor has just shared a positive update about a return as Aquaman.
Speaking with Total Film magazine, Momoa said he expects his Aquaman to be involved in the new DC Universe. The actor noted his friendship with DC Studios co-CEO Safran, as the executive was a producer on both of Momoa’s Aquaman movies. Momoa also spoke about the upcoming release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and how he wants audiences to give the movie a chance, likely to allow the sequel to escape repeating the low Shazam 2 box office. Check out the full quote below:
Peter [Safran]’s my producer [on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom], and is a dear friend. I absolutely think Aquaman will be involved in the DCU. It’s on, bro – there’s no one bigger than Aquaman! But, also, I hope people are excited to see the new one. It’s fun. I really enjoy doing comedy. There’s some really funny stuff with Patrick Wilson. I really adore him. We had a great time working together. It’s like we’re brothers. There’s a lot of cool stuff happening in this one.

Why The Jason Momoa As Lobo Rumors Can Be Put To Rest
Momoa’s update about his good chances of returning as Aquaman in the new DC Universe is great news for those who wanted to see more of the actor’s unique spin on the DC hero. However, there are those who were excited by the possibility of seeing Momoa switch DC roles, leaving Aquaman behind in order to give life to a comic book-accurate depiction of the DC anti-hero Lobo. At this point, it seems like Momoa’s chances of playing the Czarnian are close to zero.
Momoa has been outspoken about his love for the character Lobo, and how he would be interested in playing the DC anti-hero. The actor has lately even shared some teases on social media that looked like he might be getting his wish in the new DC Universe. However, Gunn made it pretty clear that although Momoa should continue in the new DC Universe, the actor would only be playing one character. At the time of this comment by Gunn, in January, the DC creative did not make it clear which character Momoa would play.
Now, through Momoa himself, it has become clear that the actor’s future in Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe will be tied to his return as Aquaman. Even though Momoa has teased playing Lobo, or made some mentions of a possible dual DC role in the past, the actor’s new Aquaman comment should serve as the final straw for the Momoa as Lobo rumors. If the actor has a future in the DC Universe, it will be as Aquaman — likely closer to the comic books than he has been so far, as will be the case for the new DC.
