The Real Story How RTR Mustangs Became A Force Among Muscle Cars

With Ford Mustangs being one of the coolest American muscle cars out there, RTR found ways to make them more desirable.

If you want to talk about muscle cars, you can’t bring up the discussion without including Ford in the mix. In the history of American muscle, the Mustang series stood out the most ever since its release in 1964. And if you’d like to make your Mustang cooler and unique, you should keep your eyes peeled on RTR Vehicles.

You may have seen or heard the RTR name from different social media influencers like Adam LZ or Formula Drift events because it’s currently one of the famous American custom companies that work closely with Ford vehicles. “RTR” also became a sensational name thanks to Ken Block and his beast-sounding all-wheel drive 1965 Mustang Hoonicorn.

With all that said, let’s take a look at RTR’s rich history and how it has impacted the automotive industry.

You can thank Vaughn Gittin Jr. because he’s the mastermind behind RTR, also known as “Ready-To-Rock.” Gittin Jr. is a pro-drifter and off-road racer, and he started his vision for RTR back in 2007. Since the first release of the Mustang RTR in 2009, things started to look brighter for the company. It became even brighter when RTR announced the partnership with Ford Motor Company to provide more parts and modifications for Mustang owners.

There’s a reason Vaughn named it Ready-To-Rock as he wanted to offer more modification options for Ford owners to push their vehicles out of their comfort zone. RTR produces every part and body styling with performance in mind. They still sell parts for 2005 Mustang models, showing the loyalty of RTR and their special bond with Ford vehicles.

You can buy single parts from them, such as front grilles, suspensions, front spoilers, and other notable parts to make your Mustang stand out. Several basic parts, like the RTR Tech 5 Mustang Wheel, will cost you $300, while extravagant upgrades like the RTR Wide Body Flares go for $3,320.

What makes RTR great is its inexpensive options for Mustang owners that want a cool custom makeover. They even have a starter package for the 2023 Ford Mustang that starts at $3,500.

After that, you have upgrade choices ranging from Spec 1 to 5. Spec 1 starts out with basic upgrades that cost around $8,000. This package gives the car Modern Aggressive Styling, OEM quality body parts, and Tactical Performance Suspension parts.

Spec 2 has a starting cost of $12,000 and has all the upgrades from Spec 1. Above that, this package gives the driver more control of the Mustang’s suspension to improve handling and performance.

The third spec is where the fun begins. It carries over the two previous specs and adds a new supercharger kit for the car’s V8 engine. This spec is a bit pricey as the starting price goes up to $23,000.

Spec 5, the highest spec for the Mustang model offered by RTR, will give you what you need to rip your Mustang through empty highways and racetracks for a mere $37,500. Ever since the success of their Mustang RTR Spec 5 10th anniversary program, they began releasing it to the public around 2020 – 2021. Some key upgrades to notice are the 750HP/615TQ Stage 1 Whipple Supercharger System and RTR-exclusive wide-body fender flares.

Take note that you can only get the Spec 5 package through the company’s Built by RTR Program or from an authorized RTR Vehicles outfitter.

RTR Bronco And Ranger Offer Unrivaled Off-Road Performance

If you’re more into off-roading Fords, RTR can still hook you up with performance upgrades. You can turn your 2023 Bronco into the Bronco RTR starting at $9,000. The package aims to enhance both the visual and performance aspect of the SUV. Some of the key features include the RTR Serialized Dash Plaque with Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s personalized signature, OEM Spare Tire Carrier Spacer, and an optional lighting package for $1,999.

You can say the same thing for the 2023 Ranger RTR option for a starting price of $10,000. The build also focuses on functionality and style, making it ready for off-road and street driving. You’ll be happy to know that Vaughn Gittin Jr. and factory Ford test drivers validated all RTR parts used on the Ranger, ensuring each part reaches the highest standards.

RTR Built Ken Block’s Hoonicorn MustangAW Mustang Hoonicorn V2Hoonigan

RTR had the chance to help the late Ken Block build the 1965 Mustang Hoonicorn RTR V1. In a project that started in 2013, Ken asked Vaughn Gittin’s team to assist with the build, and they managed to create an 845 hp all-wheel drive tire-slaying monster. RTR designed the body using carbon fiber materials to fit over the full tubular chassis, increasing durability and safety.

And when Ken Block couldn’t get enough, he wanted to tackle the dangerous Pikes Peak track by updating the V1 Hoonicorn to V2. So, he modified it to meet the Pikes Peak requirements that forced the car to reach 1,400 horsepower and 1,250 lb-ft of torque. The car could do 0-60 in 1.8 seconds, and it even won a drag race against a McLaren Senna Merlin. While it might’ve had difficulty competing with the other drag cars, the Hoonicorn certainly managed to keep up with them despite the mismatch.
