Chelsea went down 2-0 at Tottenham on Sunday, and while the club are still insistent that they will give the manager time, a number of fans have vented their anger on social media
A petition calling for Chelsea to sack Graham Potter has rapidly attracted thousands of signatures online in the wake of the Blues’ latest defeat to Tottenham.
Potter’s side were beaten 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, as second half goals from Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane condemned the manager to a 10th defeat in his 26 matches in charge.
Somewhat remarkably though, Potter was unbeaten in his first nine games as Blues manager, winning six and drawing three in what can now certainly be described as a honeymoon period.
The 10 defeats in the subsequent 17 matches have included a 4-1 humbling at former club Brighton, exits from both the FA and Carabao Cups at hands of Manchester City, and slip ups against top four hopefuls Newcastle, local rivals Fulham and bottom of the table Southampton.
Sunday’s reversal at Tottenham leaves Chelsea down in 10th place in the table, some 14 points off Spurs in fourth.
Potter has pleaded for time, pointing to the apparent struggles experienced by both Mikel Arteta at Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool as examples of what can be achieved if managers are allowed to work with a long-term vision.
Arteta frequently faced suggestions that he wasn’t good enough to be Gunners manager before leading the club to the top of the table this season while Klopp, like Potter, came to Liverpool after a season had already started and took his time to build the Reds up to becoming European and Premier League champions.
It appears that there are several Chelsea fans who aren’t willing to give Potter that time though.
On Sunday a petition was launched on the charge.org website calling for the manager to be sacked, with almost 35,000 signatures attracted at the time of writing.
According to the website, the petition was started by a user called Arash Moaref under the Twitter handle ‘@CFCOrash’, who adds the description: “Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, and shareholders, this petition is directed at you to please sack Graham Potter. As of this Petition he has 2 wins in 15 games, and has left the fans exhausted and devastated, despite spending hundreds of millions. We have immense quality in the squad, however there is one area we can change, which is the coach. For the future of Chelsea Football Club, please sack Graham Potter.”
Despite this there are believed to be no immediate moves to sack Potter, with the club still behind the manager who replaced the sacked Thomas Tuchel in September.
Chelsea next face Leeds United at home in the Premier League on Saturday, before their Champions League last-16 second leg at home to Borussia Dortmund on March 7, when they will be seeking to overturn a 1-0 deficit.
