Man Utd treble winner Dwight Yorke maintains he would command a £100m-plus fee in the current market and lists two other ex-Red Devils who would also fetch similar price tags
Dwight Yorke sensationally believes he would have broken Enzo Fernandez’s British transfer record if he were sold in today’s market.
The former Manchester United forward, 51, has also claimed treble-winning team-mates David Beckham and Andy Cole “would be the same” value as the World Cup winner after Chelsea forked out a whopping £107million for his signature on Transfer Deadline Day.
Fernandez, 22, was one of the stars of Qatar as Argentina bagged their third World Cup trophy and the west Londoners, buoyed on by frivolous owner Todd Boehly, submitted a British record-breaking bid in the final hours of the January window.
Though Yorke, who notched 65 goals in 152 appearances for the Red Devils, reckons he would command a £100m-plus fee in 2023 as holds all the attributes of a top player.
“I like to think I’d be worth more than Enzo Fernandez in today’s market,” Yorke told OLBG. “Andy Cole, David Beckham and I were goal scorers, creators, fast and all the ingredients in a player that you would want.
“It’s easy to say that, but when I watch football nowadays and see how much players are sold for, I can’t help but think about what I would be worth. I like to think that I would be up there with the biggest transfers, Becks and Cole would be the same.”
Signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 1998, the Trinidad and Tobago international was named the Premier League Player of the Season for his debut term at Old Trafford. His 18 goals also earned him another individual honour in the form of the Golden Boot while United became the first English side to complete the treble.
Yorke bettered his Premier League goal return the following season but a remarkable campaign for Kevin Phillips saw the Sunderland forward top the scoring charts with 30. The Man Utd striker later plied his trade at Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Sydney FC before ending his career back in the English top flight at Sunderland.
