Jurgen Klopp’s ‘golden rule’ dying out at Liverpool as Cody Gakpo oblivious

Cody Gakpo arrived at Liverpool in the January transfer window, but he already appears to have broken one of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp’s golden rules for his players

Jurgen Klopp’s famous rule about which Liverpool players are allowed to touch the legendary ‘This Is Anfield’ sign appears to be dying out.

The German banned his Reds stars from touching the sign until they had won a trophy with the club seven years ago. During that time few players having broken that rule, though current skipper Jordan Henderson is one of the culprits.

Now Cody Gakpo has added his name to the list of rule-breakers, following Monday’s win over Everton. The Dutchman has featured in three games at Anfield since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window.

And in his latest outing at Liverpool’s famous home, Gakpo has been spotted breaking Klopp’s rule. In footage from the club’s ‘Inside Anfield’ YouTube video from the Merseyside Derby, Gakpo can be seen touching the sign as he leaves the tunnel.

Back in 2016, Klopp revealed he had instituted a rule that players could not touch the sign unless they had won a trophy with the club. At the time, the Reds boss insisted it was a matter of respect.

“I’ve told my players not to touch the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign until they win something! It’s a sign of respect. I touched it when I was manager of Borussia Dortmund but we lost 4-0,” he said.

Gakpo scored his first goal for new club Liverpool on Monday

Touching the sign appeared to bring Gakpo good luck though, as he finally scored his first goal for the Reds. It was a win-sealing strike from the Dutchman, who admitted that it was a victory his side badly needed.

“It’s amazing. I think this was more special than the other few games I’ve played here, and I’m really grateful for all the support in all the games, and this game especially,” Gakpo told Sky Sports.

“I think it was a great game for our side, we really needed this. We were struggling the last few games and this was a good moment for us to turn this around and I think we did it.
