Portugal international Joao Cancelo has spoken out for the first time since swapping Manchester City and the Premier League for Bayern Munich and the Bundesliga
Joao Cancelo insists he has no regrets about walking out on Pep Guardiola, after joining Bayern Munich on-loan until the end of the season.
Cancelo turned his back on Manchester City after falling out with the Spaniard due to his lack of game time following the World Cup in Qatar. The Portuguese international had started just three of the last 10 games and found himself below teenager Rico Lewis in the pecking order.
But Cancelo is now relishing the chance to challenge for trophies with Bayern instead. Cancelo, who has the option to join the German giants permanently in the summer for £61m, said: “Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world.
“I know this team lives for titles. It’s enormous motivation for me to now play alongside these extraordinary players in a team,” Cancelo added. “I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I’ll give my best for Bayern.”
Bayern director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “Joao is a player we’ve been thinking about for a while now because we very much appreciate his qualities.
“He’s the optimal fit in our system with his attacking style of play and dynamism, and his mentality and experience fit very well in our team. I’m convinced Joao will help us in the coming weeks and months where we want to win titles.”
Cancelo joined City from Juventus in 2019 and went on to make 98 league appearances as well as winning three major trophies. The 28-year-old only signed a new deal less than 12 months ago that was supposed to keep him at City until 2027.
The defender’s first game in the famous red of Bayern could come against Mainz on Wednesday night in the last-16 of the DFB-Pokal. His Bundesliga debut could come on Sunday against Wolfsburg.
