The Chelsea squad spent a day at a military base in Hampshire earlier this week as manager Graham Potter tries to revive the Blues’ stuttering form and rescue the season
Graham Potter invited soldiers to meet his Chelsea flops as he tries to save the Blues’ season.
Chelsea are currently 10th in the Premier League as a result of their sluggish form this season, trailing the top four by 10 points. In a bid to resurrect their campaign, Potter took his squad to a military base near Liss in Hampshire on Tuesday, where he put the players through a series of mental exercises.
Bordon and Longmoor Military Camp played host to Chelsea stars, with the site running operational training camps and working closely with the armed forces in the past.
The players did not take part in any physical drills, though, with Potter instead keen to use the experience as a way of allowing his squad to bond with eachother.
He had discussed the need for his players to bond last week, explaining: “There will be an element of team bonding. We need to try to bring the group together.
“There are a few new faces, we’ve got a bit of window now. It’s not just about the grass, it’s about how you interact as a team and as a group. There are some things we can do, and we will use the two weeks to try to do that as best as we can.
“We have a window to do it, and with a lot of players here, we need to build some togetherness, some understanding, and we have to be creative with how we do it.”
As well as their lowly league position by their standards, Chelsea are also already out of both domestic cups. The Blues do remain in Europe, though, and will face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League round of 16.
Potter has a history of using unique approaches to get the best out of his players, having employed several off-the-wall methods during his seven years in Sweden.
Whilst managing Ostersunds between 2011 and 2018, Potter had his players perform ballet, write a theatre show about Vikings and rap traditional Finnish songs.
The tactics worked too, with Potter taking Ostersunds from the fourth tier to the top flight as well as winning the Swedish Cup and reaching the knockout stages of the Europa League.
