The Devil Wears Prada alum discusses how Cruise calmed her down during an onset breakdown while they were filming The Edge of Tomorrow.
The Edge of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt says co-star Tom Cruise offered her tough love when she started to panic over her 85-pound costume.
Blunt revealed that while filming the 2014 sci-fi action film, the first time she put on the costume, she had a breakdown because it was too heavy. “We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way,” Blunt recalled during the SmartLess podcast. “When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy. The first time I put it on I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do.
“I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry,” she continued. “I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’ He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a pussy, OK?'” Blunt was caught off guard by Cruise’s commented and broke out laughing, which eased her into production. However, the suit later resulted in a permanent injury of her ribs and collarbone.
Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s 2004 novel All You Need Is Kill, the 2014 award-winning film Edge of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman, follows Maj. William Cage’s (Cruise) journey after being thrown into a time loop during a mission. Accompanied by Rita Vrataski (Blunt), Cage utilized the opportunity to hone his fighting skills, so he could defeat the aliens attacking Earth.
Will an Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Happen? The film received positive reviews among audiences and critics, who praised its action sequences, humor and the unique take on the time loop subgenre. Cruise was also regarded as an action hero. However, the film’s performance was not ideal. It grossed $370 million worldwide against a budge of $178 million.
Despite rumors of a a sequel, Blunt cast doubt on the idea that one would actually happen anytime soon due to scheduling conflicts and financial reasons. “Honestly, I think the movie is too expensive,” she said in a previous interview. “I just don’t know how we’re going to do it.” Blunt clarified that the reasons a sequel might not happen do not include a lack of interest on her part. On the contrary, she said making the film “was an amazing experience” even though it was “the hardest thing” she had ever done. “This one [was] one of the first experiences I had where I was brought completely into the fold creatively… I was treated like gold,” Blunt said.
