The comet moth (Argema mittrei), also called the moon moth, is found in the rain forests of Madagascar. The male of this silk moth, which is among the largest in the world, measures 20 centimeters from wingtip to tailtip.
The “Madagascar comet moth” is another name for a massive silk moth found only in Madagascar’s jungles. Because to the degradation of their natural habitat and deforestation, they are just as vulnerable as many other species.
Prior to pupating, their caterpillars eat nonstop for around two months. Depending on the temperature and humidity levels, it takes an egg 70–85 days to develop into an adult. They utilize the color of their wings to entice a partner.
An adult moth has a lifetime of around 12 days (females live longer due to their fat reserves). Moths don’t have mouths, therefore they can’t eat, and their sole objective is to generate the next generation before they pass away after five days.
Moths and butterflies have a common ancestor in the Lepidoptera order, which makes them closely related. Compared to butterflies, moths have nine times more species. There are more than 200,000 species of moths, and there are probably another 5,000 that haven’t been discovered.
