With Wednesday Season 2 officially confirmed, there’s now a big chance to make an underused character a star player and a hero Nevermore needs.
The following contains spoilers for Wednesday Season 1, now streaming on Netflix.
In Season 1 of Netflix’s highly-viewed Wednesday, it seemed like Bianca Barclay was indeed going to be the main foil for Jenna Ortega’s titular character. They shot barbs at each other, developing a rivalry, as seen in that epic fencing sequence that Bianca won. However, they got on the same page, realizing someone was targeting teens at the Nevermore Academy.
Bianca even confessed she was jealous of Wednesday, who didn’t care about what people thought. This brought them closer, but Bianca was quickly pushed out the series — that is, until the finale had her helping Wednesday out when Joseph Crackstone rose up with Laurel Gates to destroy the school. However, with Wednesday Season 2 officially announced, there’s a nuanced role available that could do Blanca justice in a twist that’d fit exactly what Nevermore needs.
Wednesday Could Make Bianca a Vigilante Leader
The Nightshades belong to a secret society that spans centuries at Nevermore. Wednesday’s ancestor, Goody Addams, started it, with Morticia leading it as well down the line. Their job was to look out for outcasts and protect their little supernatural pocket from “normies” who’d want to harm, or worse, kill them. Coincidentally, a member of Cousin Itt’s family also oversaw this group, although it’s become diluted.
With the likes of Bianca and Xavier running the show, they have more séances, spells and power-ups, though it isn’t anything serious — at least not to the larger scope of the school. However, following Laurel Gates’ infiltration as a teacher, the death of Principal Weems, and the Hyde mauling students, clearly Nevermore needs protection. They also can’t trust the humans in town, which creates the opportunity for an inspired Bianca to change the group back to functioning as guardians of their fraternity. This can lead to them investigating cases outside of Wednesday’s story by hunting down both mages and humans who’d want to cause trouble, delivering them to their respective police forces in society.

Wednesday Can Dissect Bianca’s Present & Past
Ego aside, making Bianca the altruistic leader of the Nightshade Society would fit her character. Given her connection to the Nevermore student body, she can recruit for their supernatural avengers, giving her prominence and correcting how underused she was in Season 1. Setting up a Black female character to be something big, then minimizing her role felt a bit cheap. A new direction in Season 2 can fix this issue by capitalizing on Bianca’s leadership potential, her poise and how people respect her.
Seeing as Wednesday is a loner too, and might be preoccupied with Enid and an Xavier romance, it would make sense for Bianca to deal with the Nightshades. As a siren, such a role would allow the show to have Bianca training more, evolving her powers and fighting skills, maybe even with Wednesday’s Uncle Fester. This offers room to explore the shady cult her mother’s involved with, causing Bianca to run away from, using her persuasive powers to get into the school.
There is massive potential with the cult conspiracy teased in Season 1 that could easily have Bianca needing the Nightshades to investigate it, especially if things get eerie with her blackmailing mother. This could further dissect her past as Brandy and have the group meet new enemies they need to take down before Bianca’s secret at Nevermore is exposed. Ultimately, there’s a lot of story to mine from Bianca’s personal life and the Nightshades’ responsibilities. Hopefully, Season 2 lets Bianca shine by leading a new era of mystical heroes.
