These photographs show a kudu with a bizarre growth sprouting from his head – caused by the fracture of his horn which has failed to regrow correctly.
Years ago, the outer part of the horn came off and was left with only the bone. Not long after, the owner noticed a growth forming – and it has been growing ever since.
It was captured by company manager and keen photographer Abraham De Villiers, 52, at Mowana Private Game Farm in Limpopo, South Africa.
Mr De Villiers was told by the owner the growth doesn’t cause any discomfort for the kudu as, while it might affect his hearing, it does not affect his grazing.
If he sees the kudu in any discomfort, he will have it removed.
Mr De Villiers said: ‘I was extremely excited as I have never seen a kudu bull with such an unusual horn. I actually know the owner and he said that while it may influence his hearing, it doesn’t affect his grazing and he is happy and eating well. I highly doubt I’ll ever see anything like this again.’
The kudu, spotted on a private game reserve in South Africa, has this bizarre but ultimately benign growth sprouting from his head
The lump started growing after the antelope broke its horn, exposing the bone. Its owner says it has continued to get bigger ever since
However, the growth doesn’t cause any discomfort for the kudu as, while it might affect his hearing, it does not affect his grazing
