At a waterhole in South Africa, a hyena made a spectacular attempt to snatch an impala from a leopard’s throat.
After spending hours observing the wildlife at the Delaporte waterhole in Kruger National Park, Peet Van Schalkwyk was able to record the clip.
Before learning that a leopard was hiding in the bush, the retired engineering professor had seen elephants, zebras, giraffes, and impalas drinking at the watering well. The predator spooked impala herds while he waited on the sidelines, but his early morning mission was unsuccessful.
However, Mr. Van Schalkwyk was able to record the sʜᴏᴄᴋing moment when the leopard successfully lunged for prey, pursuing after one impala who had fallen into the water. The animal was forced to the ground ᴄʟᴏsᴇ to the cement barrier after being dragged by the neck in the direction of a tree.
Just as the impala’s situation appeared desperate, a hyena stumbled over to the waterhole. The impala grabbed the opportunity to flee when it spotted the leopard in the nearby thicket and chased the predator away.
Mr. Van Schalkwyk asserted that the hyena ᴀᴄᴄɪᴅᴇɴᴛally saved the impala. They were thrilled to have seen soᴍᴇᴛʜing so extraordinary. For them, that was a first; they had previously seen cheetah ᴋɪʟʟs but never a leopard ᴋɪʟʟ.
