A former British Army General says Nato should consider sending Ukraine all the weapons it wants to help end the war – otherwise, it could go on for years.
General Sir Richard Barrons told Forces News that it is now “inconceivable” the conflict could end peacefully.
The former head of Joint Forces Command added that recent Russian losses are sparking ever louder criticism inside Russia about the way the war is being conducted.
In Ukraine, the winter of war continues, along a 1,500-mile front where Russia and Ukrainian forces continue to fight as they prepare for new offensives.
General Sir Richard Barrons says: “Russia is gearing up its industry and its people, it talks about this being essentially a war with Nato, which is not how we see it.”
However, he added that what is being heard more are “voices that are blaming Russian military leadership, the generals, for the incompetent way in which they are doing two things.
“One is not protecting their own people and, secondly, just throwing them at Ukrainian firepower to no great gain in places like Bakmut.”
Ukraine will lose without the West
The former British Army General believes it is “inconceivable now that there could be a useful peaceful discussion about how to make the war stop.
“And it is inconceivable that you could be really clear-sighted about who is going to win, provided, and it is a big provided, the West continues to arm Ukraine.
He added: “Without that, Ukraine will lose.”
