Manchester City closed the gap on Arsenal with a win at Chelsea but still lie five points behind the Premier League leaders
John Stones reckons that Manchester City’s biggest danger in defending their Premier League title is…Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s side moved to within five points of leaders Arsenal and pulled clear of third-placed Newcastle with an important 1-0 win at Chelsea. City bounced back from being held at home by a struggling Everton team to take advantage of the two teams they are sandwiched by in the table drawing with each other earlier in the week.
However, a squad that has come from behind more than once in Guardiola’s time to win the Premier League will not be getting carried away by closing the gap at the top. With the knowledge both of their current form – they were poor against Everton and in the first half against Chelsea – and what has gone before in previous seasons, City will not be letting complacency set in.
“We can be our biggest enemy sometimes,” said Stones. “I think with the players that we’ve got and how we play we can be our biggest enemy, so we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground and keep focusing on the match in hand and see where it takes us.
“We know how we play, and we know what is expected of us. The manager wants us to play well and that comes with winning games as well. When we play well, we’re on form, we’re confident, we create a lot of chances and everything kind of comes off.
“We want to get back into that rhythm now – I think today was a great start after the previous game. Games are coming thick and fast now so hopefully we can keep it going.”
