Andy Robertson has admitted that Liverpool players failed to follow manager Jurgen Klopp’s instructions during their disastrous defeat against Brentford.
Klopp’s men were second best in every department as they slumped to a poor 3-1 defeat thanks to an own goal from Ibrahima Konate plus strikes from Yoan Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo.
The horror show from Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium is another setback in what has already been an extremely below-par season for the Reds. They seemed to have turned a corner after recording four straight victories before their poor showing against the Bees.
After the match, full-back Robertson revealed that he and his teammates didn’t follow the game plan set out by Klopp.
He said: “Obviously we didn’t do what we were supposed to do. It’s as simple as that.
“We didn’t have any runners in-behind, we didn’t have anyone high and wide, we didn’t have anyone in spaces, we couldn’t keep the ball, we lost the second balls, balls in-behind they dealt with, set-pieces they dealt with.
“So yeah, when you all add all those things up, you’re never going to get a result at this place. We knew what Brentford are good at, it’s not hard to work out what they’re good at, and they’re very consistent at it. We were prepared as to what we were expecting but obviously just struggled with it.
“Set-pieces were a huge weapon for them, the first two goals came from that, that’s hugely disappointing from our point of view. You go in at half-time at 2-0 down and you have to fight an uphill battle.”
The defeat leaves Liverpool sixth in the Premier League table, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United and a humongous 15 points behind high-flying leaders Arsenal.
Liverpool will now prepare to start the defence of their FA Cup this weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
