With great anticipation, Tom Cruise, Hollywood’s top action star, said that his upcoming “Mission Impossible” project would be the first film ever to be shot in space. NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX collaborated on the ambitious multi-million dollar endeavor.
For the movie, Tom Cruise would have performed the first-ever space walk by a civilian. In an effort to topple Tom Cruise’s project, the Russian film “Challenge” was launched just four months later. Alas! They succeeded, and how!
Yulia Peresild, a Russian actress, was chosen from more than 3000 applicants for a pivotal role in the film “The Challenge.” The protagonist is a female physician who is sent to the International Space Station (ISS) to save a cosmonaut. The three Russian cosmonauts on board the ISS make an appearance in the film. On October 5, 2021, Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, actress Yulia Peresild, and film director Klim Shipenko set off for the International Space Station. They worked on a difficult shot inside the ISS for 12 days.
Here’s the trailer of the movie
What will happen to Tom Cruise’s project now? The seasoned star is still scheduled to film the first Hollywood production to travel to space. Tom would make history as the first non-military person to space walk away from the ISS, according to Universal Studios. A feat that would truly necessitate several months of NASA’s EVA training.
Seems like everyone else is giving Tom a run for his money, tryna beat his records. Probably Moon should be the next frontier for the next ‘Mission Impossible’ venture. Do it before the Chinese. What say Tom 😉
