Many people love Netflix’s Wednesday, but the popular series is not without its cringey moments.

Wednesday is one of the most-watched and highest-ranked Netflix series ever, and it can be attributed to its story, character development, and stellar cast. The show follows Wednesday Addams after being expelled from school, as she is forced into joining a school for outcasts, Nevermore.

However, despite its popularity, Wednesday is not without its uncomfortable moments. It is difficult to create something surrounding a character that is known for her deadpan nature and lack of emotion, and at times, these characteristics can fall into the trap of being overdone. There are clear moments in the story that are cringey, but most fans still wouldn’t change them for the world.

In Wednesday, those with gifts and abilities are called outcasts, as they’re not welcome in regular society. The people without such talents are called normies. Both of the names are basically just insults, as outcast implies a negative difference setting them apart, and normie is a patronizing and strange way to say normal.

The so-called outcasts are actually werewolves, sirens, and people with abilities. They’re supernatural beings. The nickname outcast is cringey and seems to be an attempt to hide what the outcasts are, despite it being obvious. Normie also sounds cringe-worthy, and both names lack creativity.

9/10An Outcast Among Outcasts

Wednesday goes from a regular school, where she stands out a lot, to a school for outcasts, where she shouldn’t stand out at all. Enid tells her when she arrives that the school is full of people like her, and yet Wednesday still stands out.

It comes across as somewhat cringe-worthy that Wednesday, a young girl without gifts when she joins Nevermore, somehow becomes the talk of the town. Everyone is paying her a lot of attention, even though there are werewolves, shapeshifters, vampires, etc. At a school filled with different creatures, Wednesday shouldn’t have stood out so much, and it became cliché when she did.

8/10The Initial Uncomfortableness Of The Dancing

The dance sequence in Wednesday was a huge hit with fans, and many have been recreating it on social media. However, some viewers have critiqued the scene for being initially cringe-worthy.

When Wednesday begins to dance, it’s pretty uncomfortable. Her date, Tyler, isn’t dancing, and everyone around her is dancing in a very regular fashion, which makes Wednesday stand out. It is another instance of making an outcast stand out among outcasts, which feels overdone. However, when Wednesday gets into the dance, it becomes clear that she is actually a really good dancer, so the cringe fades, and viewers realize how great the scene is.

7/10Wednesday’s Fake Smile

The series starts with Wednesday in her original school, and it shows viewers how she enacts revenge upon her brother’s bullies, getting herself expelled in the process. After dumping piranhas into the pool, Wednesday smiles.

Wednesday showing positive emotion does sometimes feel fake and forced. The smile as the piranhas chase after the people in the pool might make sense for her character, as she is someone who enjoys violence. However, it doesn’t feel genuine, unlike the happy moment at the end of the series when she hugs Enid. There are times for positive emotion to come through, and the series didn’t always get it right.

6/10The Many Love Triangles

There are many love triangles in Wednesday. Two revolve around Morticia and Gomez, and the third people are Garrett and Weems. Another two involve both Wednesday and Xavier, with Bianca and Tyler being the other people involved.

It seems that there are just too many love triangles. And love triangles are often considered to be an overdone trope, which makes them cringe-worthy. They are meant to add tension and a new dynamic to the plot. However, with them being so overused in Wednesday, it does the opposite.

5/10Enid Was Within Earshot Of Eugene

Eugene, Enid, and Wednesday are all in the beekeeping shed as Wednesday uses Enid for cover while she heads into the forest to investigate. Rowan exclaims, “This is the most girls I’ve ever had in the shed,” and then not-so-subtly says, “I’ve always had a thing for werewolf chicks.”

Not only is the dialogue cringey in and of itself, but it’s also particularly weird that he’s talking as though Enid isn’t less than a foot away and can defiantly hear everything he’s saying. Humor is injected back into the uncomfortable scene when Wednesday tells Eugene he has a less than 1% chance with Enid, and he seems thrilled to even have a shot with her.

4/10The Deadpan Expression

Wednesday has a very flat resting face, almost a permanent scowl, which can be awkward in social situations. Where most people would smile in a social setting, even a fake one, Wednesday remains totally unbothered and unfazed by the social expectations placed upon her.

However, the deadpan facial expression does get old fast. The shtick just isn’t as interesting or humorous as time goes on. On the other hand, the look of pure contention is classic Wednesday, and it is important to stick to what fans are familiar with in regard to the Addams family.

3/10Tyler Picking Up On Signals

Many fans were confused when Tyler told Wednesday that she was giving him signals because, from Wednesday’s perspective and the viewers, she has been nothing but cold to him. It seems Tyler took the cold and sharp wit to be somewhat flirtatious and her deadpan and stern expression as an indication that she liked him.

This is strange, as Tyler appears to be seeing something with Wednesday that is simply not there. She was in no way signaling him or hinting; she was just being herself. She just happens to be really mean, which is not a signal that Wednesday likes Tyler, but more that she is treating him just as she treats everybody else.

2/10Wednesday Is Exempt From Dress Codes

Color-coded events generally have a strict dress code, like the event where everybody is wearing white because that is the theme of the Rave’N Dance. And yet, Wednesday is able to show up and freely enter the dance while wearing black.

Of course, black is Wednesday’s signature color. But it doesn’t make much sense that she would be allowed to be the only person there who was not in a light color and the only person off-theme. This is quite a cringe-worthy moment as it becomes clear that she is being given an exception as the main character of the series. Wednesday’s school uniform is also a different color from everybody else’s, which serves no purpose in the world of the series, but does make her stand out as the protagonist.

1/10The Stream Of Witty Retorts

Initially, Wednesday’s witty remarks and comebacks come across as clever and humorous. However, after a continuous stream of them throughout the show, they do become quite grating. The majority of Wednesday’s dialogue turns into puns and plays on words that eventually come across as planned rather than off the cuff.

When confronted with Lucas Walker at the dance, who claims to be coming in peace, Wednesday retorts: “That’s a shame. I brought my pocket mace. The medieval kind.” She earlier said to him while he was dressed as a pilgrim, “If the buckled shoe fits.” These lines don’t come across as intimidating; they come off a bit weird and cringe-worthy.
