Jorginho’s agent explains the state of play heading into January as midfielder bids fly in amid links to the likes of Enzo Fernandez.
Jorginho’s agent has once again spoken about regarding the Italian’s future at Chelsea. The 31-year-old can negotiate a pre-contract away from the club in January when his deal enters the final six months.
Chelsea are trying to revamp their midfield and are looking at younger, more physical presences in front of their defence but Jorginho was still chosen to start against Bournemouth as the Premier League returned. He played the full match having not been away on international duty with Italy.
He was supported by the box-to-box impact of Denis Zakaria around him, though, as Graham Potter attempts to find the right balance throughout his team. Enzo Fernandez is seen as a possible heir to his midfield position and the Blues have made progress with a bid to sign him.
It is understood that the club would be willing to pay more than the midfielder’s £105million release clause to get him in January, with a more favourable long-term financial arrangement. And thus he could yet play alongside Jorginho this season.
Having won the Champions League and finished as the third best player in the world just 12 months ago, Jorginho is now anything but certain to stay in London after June. Newcastle have been linked with an attempt to get him in 2023 and a move back to Italy has always been on.
As things approach crunch time though his agent has come out to give an update on the situation. He said: “We’ve received a proposal from Chelsea to sign a new contract so it’s our priority to discuss with Chelsea.”
However, the player himself explained earlier this month: “Of course I do, I love Chelsea. But this is a thing I’m not going to think about now. I need to think about winning games. Otherwise, it’s a problem.”
He has remained a popular figure in the dressing room and has featured heavily under four managers, though it has also never seemed far away from being the end. As things look set to come to a conclusion in the coming months agent Joao Santos explained: “Napoli interest? We’d be happy of their interest, it’s a special club for Jorginho but there’s nothing as of now.”
Chelsea themselves have an offer on the table for the player but it is tilted more towards their terms – a shorter deal – than his.
