2023 will see the release of Stan Lee: An Original Documentary on Disney+, and a new teaser promises a celebration of 100 years of the comic book icon
Marvel Studios
As comic book fans around the world celebrated what would have been Stan Lee’s 100th birthday, Marvel announced that a special documentary will be coming to Disney+ in 2023 that will celebrate the life of the comic book legend. A short teaser was released for Stan Lee: An Original Documentary on Marvel and Disney social media accounts containing only the tagline of “100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee.”
For years, Stan Lee became a part of the MCU in more ways than just being the creator of many of the iconic heroes that appeared on screen. In every movie until just after his death in 2018, Lee appeared in a cameo role that usually played to his sense of humor and fun. His final appearance was in Avengers: Endgame, appearing de-aged, riding along a highway in what became a fun but poignant moment as a final chapter in the Stan Lee’s own Marvel saga.
Of course Lee was not only involved with Marvel, and over the years also developed stories for DC’s biggest heroes. For that reason, DC announced that they will be releasing Tales From Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee, which will be an anthology collection of ten of Lee’s DC stories that saw his take on the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
Stan Lee May Not Have Made His Last Marvel Cinematic Universe AppearanceMarvel Studios
While the MCU has steered clear of delving into the world of CGI generated technology to “create” a version of Lee on screen, it was announced earlier this year that Marvel Studios had come to an agreement that secures the rights to use the name, image, signature and voice of the comic book legend in movies and TV shows for the next 20 years. The deal also includes the use of existing footage and voice recordings of Lee, and exclusive rights to use the same in all of Disney’s theme parks, cruise ships and merchandise.
In a statement at the time, Andy Heyward, Chairman and CEO of Genius Brands, expressed his excitement to be continuing the legacy of Stan Lee into a new generation. He said:
“We are proud to be the stewards of the incredibly valuable rights to Stan Lee’s name, likeness, merchandise, and intellectual property brand and, there is no better place than Marvel and Disney where Stan should be for his movies and theme park experiences. As we enter the centennial year of Stan’s birthday, December 28, 2022, we are thrilled to see his memory and legacy will continue to delight fans through this new long-term agreement with Marvel.”
For Marvel fans, the simple fact is that Stan Lee is Marvel and there is nothing that is going to change that. While there are plenty of ways that Lee can continue to incorporated into Marvels’ future output, the new documentary is certain to be a huge hit when it is released sometime in 2023.
