Could any actress outdo Scarlett Johansson in the role of Black Widow? Not a chance.
Could any actress outdo Scarlett Johansson in the role of Black Widow? Not a chance. There are so many reasons why she was the perfect casting choice for Black Widow. It’s funny because Emily Blunt was initially cast for the role but later decided to back out due to a scheduling conflict.
With the Black Widow film slated for release in November 2020, it’s a good time to look back at all the reasons that Scarlett Johansson is a fantastic Black Widow. Many fans were upset to see her sacrifice herself in Avengers: Endgame. She did so to retrieve the Soul Stone on Vormir. Luckily, fans will have the chance to see her at least one more time, as we will get to go back in time and enjoy Natasha Romanoff’s backstory.
There were some actresses that wanted to be Black Widow, and some fans believe that those actresses would have been better than Johansson. However, we think Scarlett was the ideal pick for this iconic MCU role.
15/15Perfect: She Comes Off Flirty But She’s Also Super-Sneaky
We’re first introduced to Natasha Romanoff in Iron Man 2 when she became an assistant of Tony Stark’s. Stark clearly loved her at first, because she was super flirty and loved to spend time with him. However, that made her character special, because her charm helped her get closer to other characters.
14/15Perfect: She’s Gorgeous And Perfectly Fits Into The Black Widow Suit
13/15Perfect: Her Emotions Show How Much The Avengers Mean To Her
What makes Black Widow such a popular Avenger? Maybe it’s the emotions that she pours into her role. We really see her strong emotions in Avengers: Endgame, as she can’t come to terms with half of the world being gone. When Johansson is on the screen, it feels so real.
12/15Perfect: Johansson Looks Identical To The Comic Version Of Black Widow
When you look at Black Widow in the comics, she actually looks very similar to Scarlett Johansson. Some comic book characters are harder to portray in live-action than others, but Johansson’s resemblance to Black Widow made it easy to bring this character to the big screen. If you look the part, then you can most certainly play it, as long as you’ve got the acting chops.
11/15Perfect: Her Speed And Fighting Ability Make Her Action Scenes A Lot Of Fun To Watch
You can be pretty and have a ton of emotions, but can you fight? Johansson does enough of the fighting to bring the action to life but also has Heidi Moneymaker as her stunt double. Most actors and actresses have stunt doubles in action movies; however, Johannson is physically fit enough to realistically portray a superhero.
10/15Perfect: She Has A Feisty Personality Which Helps Her Put Villains In Their Place
Flirty, yes. Feisty? Oh, yes. It’s good to be flirty, but we also see a feisty Black Widow throughout a lot of the movies. She tends to become this way with villains or people that she’s unsure about. This feistiness actually helps with the transition into fight scenes, because she adds tension right before something is about to go down.
9/15Perfect: She Will Do Whatever It Takes For The Character, Including Kissing Her Co-Stars
Don’t take this the wrong way! Scarlett Johansson would’ve had to agree to kiss her co-stars, and she did agree twice, with Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo. These were moments that Marvel fans likely won’t forget, especially the scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff are hiding in a mall.
8/15Perfect: Ability To Blend Her Character With Other Heroes
Something that Johansson is forced to do really well (and she does do it so well!) is relating to other characters. Since Black Widow is set to release in November after being pushed back due to COVID-19, Johansson still hasn’t had her own movie. Her character has had to mesh well with other characters to make the movies exceptional – she’s done a tremendous job.
7/15Perfect: Character Development Through The Series Showcases A Willingness To Change
Black Widow’s character development throughout the MCU series is incredible. She goes from this very secretive character (who’s an assistant to someone who’s a leader within the Avengers) to a hero who’s willing to sacrifice her life to help others. It seems like every time we saw Black Widow in a new movie, her character had evolved.
6/15Perfect: She Does A Great Job Of Hiding Black Widow’s Secrets
We never really hear about Black Widow’s secrets, but hopefully, we will in her upcoming film. A huge part of Black Widow’s character is that she has a ton of secrets but she doesn’t want those secrets to weaken her…or define her personality. She has to hold this pain while staying strong…and helping all of the people around her.
5/15Perfect: The Love She Shows For Her Co-Stars Helps Her Character
Black Widow loves the Avengers. You almost don’t know which character she’s the closest to when she dies. She’s really close with Hulk, Captain America, and Hawkeye. When she sacrifices her life, she’s with Hawkeye. Her relationships with the other Avengers make her character so endearing.
4/15Perfect: Always Makes Great Speeches To The Avengers
Natasha does a great job talking with her co-stars. That sounds really bland and boring, but she always has a powerful message and a great way of saying it. A lot of her quotes from Avengers: Endgame were really special, and truly showcased how much the Avengers meant to her. Maybe we needed more of that.
3/15Perfect: She’s Extremely Versatile
The versatility that Scarlett Johansson while playing Black Widow is impressive. Anything that Marvel Studios needs her to do, she can do. Maybe that’s what makes her character so special. Because she’s so versatile, she can always do the unexpected. This helps add some shock factor in the movies.
2/15Perfect: Johansson Embraces Different Black Widow Looks
We don’t know if it’s Scarlett Johansson’s decision or Marvel Studios’ decision, but Johansson’s look always changes. From Iron Man 2 to Black Widow, she doesn’t have one set outfit. From her short red hair to her short blonde hair, she always looks different. Even the Black Widow outfits tend to change a lot.
1/15Perfect: Her Flexibility Allows Her To Do Many Things
Scarlett Johansson is clearly flexible, which is why she was able to wear that all-black outfit in the first place. Her flexibility helps with a lot of different scenes and gives that shock factor to the character. If she wasn’t so flexible, she might not be able to do a lot of what she does, including the fight scenes. Not Perfect: She Hasn’t Proved That She Can Carry Her Own Movie…Yet
No one can be completely perfect, and there’s one reason why Scarlett Johansson isn’t the perfect Black Widow. We don’t know if she can carry a whole MCU film on her own. We will find out in November, but as of right now, we’re just wondering how she’s going to do. There is always the possibility that the film won’t live up to expectations.
