Erling Haaland had a lackluster day in the semi-final first leg of the UEFA Champions League 2022/23 between Real Madrid and Man City.
Contrary to expectations, striker Erling Haaland had an extremely disappointing performance in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid . The 51-goal striker this season has largely been locked up by centre-back Antonio Rudiger in a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.
Haaland made two early attempts at Los Blancos’ goal but both were saved by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. But then, the Norwegian striker barely touched the ball and was in control of the Real Madrid defence.
In the last game, Haaland only had 21 touches of the ball – the least of any player starting the game, even less than Man City goalkeeper Ederson. Spanish publication Marca gave Haaland an extremely low score after the match (3 points).
However, the 23-year-old striker has 90 minutes to score against Real Madrid next week, or maybe more if the semi-final goes to extra time. And can the Norwegian superstar go that long without scoring?
Meanwhile, Marca gave former Chelsea player Antonio Rudiger 10/10 for his success in keeping Haaland quiet. The German centre-back has done what not many defenders have done this season with Haaland quite effectively.
After the end of the game, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti was full of praise for his defender: “Rudiger was excellent. Top performances. He is very good, an experienced player and an experienced player. great quality”.
“It was not easy but he played very well. I am very happy with Rudiger.”
The rematch between Real Madrid and Man City will take place at Etihad.
