De Bruyne’s goal for Man City should have been disallowed?

Kevin De Bruyne’s 1-1 equalizer for Man City caused controversy when Real Madrid thought the ball had previously crossed the goal line.

After De Bruyne’s goal, Real Madrid complained that the ball had gone all the way in after Bernardo Silva controlled the ball just outside the line.

“The ball has gone out, the technology says so, not me, but it seems strange that they (the refs) didn’t control the situation well. The referee was not fair,” coach Carlo Ancelotti said in a press conference about the match.

Technology shows that the ball is out of bounds

An image reproduced by BeinSports shows the ball going out when Bernardo Silva tries to put it on the touchline. Ancelotti was furious at the time and also after the game. It was because of the reaction that he received a yellow card.

“It was a corner kick without a whistle. The referee was not very fair. He took out a card for me and I told him to show the cards to the people on the field (referring to the referee),” said the Italian coach.

It was from this controversial situation that not long after, Man City organized an attack in front of Real Madrid’s penalty area, Ilkay Gundogan passed the ball to De Bruyne from afar to level the score.

De Bruyne then took a long shot to score for Man City

Commenting on the incident, former Spanish referee Pavel Fernandez told Radio MARCA that VAR could not be considered because City’s attacking phase took place quite far after Eduardo Camavinga lost the ball.

In the first half, Real Madrid opened the scoring thanks to Vinicius Jr also from a beautiful long shot after Camavinga dribbled from home and provided an assist.
