When a herd of elephants appeared out of nowhere, everyone was surprised by the sight of several adorable newborn calves. It was unclear where they had come from, but their arrival brought joy to all who saw them.
At a wildlife sanctuary in Kenya, an elephant unexpectedly gave birth to a baby elephant, a touching moment that surprised both mother and mahout. The news was shared by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organization that is committed to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing orphaned baby elephants.
A 25-second video posted on Twitter shows the newborn baby elephant, named Milo, lying on the ground surrounded by a herd of curious elephants. The video was captioned by the organization with the following message: “We witnessed the birth of this baby elephant. Yesterday morning, Melia gave birth to her first baby! It was an incredible sight.” The name Milo means “beloved.”
The video has received over 51,000 views and 4,000 likes, with numerous users expressing gratitude for the fund’s efforts. A user remarked, “It’s heartwarming! Surrounded by love from all sides, from elephants and humans. Thanks to the keepers for making this possible. You guys are wonderful people!” Another user commented on the beauty of witnessing Milo’s arrival and the excited reaction from the gatekeepers behind.
The Trust reports that during dry seasons, wild elephants and orphaned elephants tend to gather outside Ithumba. Benjamin, the head keeper, heard a loud noise and observed some movements. All the elephants appeared to be alarmed by whatever had fallen, and even the typically tranquil larger females became scarce.
Before Benjamin could comprehend what had occurred, other elephants arrived on the scene. It was then that he discovered Melia, an orphaned baby elephant, had given birth and the baby was still partially covered by a white placenta.
According to the Trust, Melia has gradually gained weight, but as a large elephant, she carries it well and it was not obvious when she was pregnant. Melia had visited the reserves the night before, but there were no signs that she would go into labor a few hours later. In fact, when the baby was born, Melia appeared confused by its presence. However, experienced elephants stepped in to assist the first-time mother. Over the course of a few days, Melia continued to stare at her newborn and gently stroke it with her trunk.
