Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Mamoa talks about his disappointment regarding Warner Bros. not following his original ideas for the movie.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom leading man Jason Momoa discussed his disappointment over Warner Bros. changing the story of his next cinematic outing as the eponymous King of the Seven Seas.
Momoa touched upon these thoughts while speaking to Men’s Health, during which he shared his two cents on how he felt Aquaman was treated. “It’s not that I don’t care about Aquaman; it’s a wonderful character,” the actor commented. “Aquaman is probably the hardest character in comic-book history. He’s made fun of and ridiculed, but I tried to give it heart and soul, and I’m proud of it in certain ways.
Do I feel pressure for [the sequel] to do well? No. All I can do is give it my all. But it’s in a lot of other people’s hands.” The “other people’s hands” Momoa brought up were various directors having their own ideas on who the Marine Monarch is, as well as Warner Bros., who didn’t totally follow the treatment for The Lost Kingdom that Momoa and his friend Brian Mendoza sold them.
In that same interview, Momoa revealed he was confused about the first Aquaman movie being a success at the box office, saying, “Well, to be perfectly honest, I was absolutely baffled that Aquaman was received so well.
I’ve done things that are amazing that no one sees and no one gives a shit about. You just don’t know in this business. I don’t go do things and think, Oh, I’m gonna get $1 billion on this one. I go in and do my best job.”
A New Direction for Aquaman
On the topic of The Lost Kingdom, returning director James Wan confirmed Aquaman will join forces with his evil half-brother, Orm in order to stop Black Manta from “unleashing a powerful ancient evil.” Wan had also said back in 2021 that The Lost Kingdom is “very heavily inspired” by the cult horror movie Planet of the Vampires, having previously talked about the film having horror elements back in 2020.
However, things might not turn out well, as it has been reported that Aquaman 2 has had poor test screenings. Additionally, it was claimed that these less-than-stellar screenings were part of the reason Momoa may allegedly switch over to playing Lobo in the DC Universe, though DC Studios co-CEO and co-president James Gunn has not yet revealed any plans for either Lobo or Aquaman in the franchise.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theaters on Dec. 20.
