Every anime fan knows about Luffy and Zoro, but there are several underrated One Piece characters one should know about.
One Piece is an ongoing anime that is popular for its variety of characters and original story. Since the series aired, many fans have latched onto specific characters, such as Zoro and Nami, because of their unique personalities. However, because there are so many different personas, it is hard to keep track of them all within the series.
Because of this, many unique characters become lost in the storyline. Even if the person themselves is fundamental to the plot of the series, their own story may be overlooked. Regardless, the personas below are the most underrated characters in One Piece.
10Johnny And Yosaku
Although they were only seen near the starting seasons of the show, Johnny and Yosaku brought much-needed entertainment with them. The two samurai grew up with Zoro and met the freshly formed Straw Hats at the beginning of the series.
Yosaku was cured by Luffy’s crew after he had gotten scurvy, which caused the duo to form a connection with the group. Both Johnny and Yosaku held similar personalities; the two of them were good-natured and were repeatedly astounded by the Straw Hats’ strength.
9Oars Jr.
Oars Jr. was seen in the battle of Ace’s rescue mission. Though he was large in stature and held remarkable strength, the character himself was kind-hearted. In the flashbacks seen with Ace, Oars is shown repeatedly appreciating the little things Ace did for him.
In their time together as White Beard pirates, the two of them formed a special bond. Oars puts himself in danger’s way while trying to rescue Ace. This is the cause of his downfall. However, the interaction between him and Ace was an important addition to the arc.
8Queen Otohime
In seventh place on the list sits the Queen of fish man island, Otohime. During the arc of Fishman Island, Otohime is given a brief backstory by Jinbe. While the Queen was alive, she put in maximum effort to destroy the outlook that fish man held towards humans.
Otohime held a proud personality and attempted to establish a healthy connection between humans and fishmen, even though the two seemed to despise each other. Despite how brief it was, Otohime’s backstory was important to the history of Fishman Island.
7Kokoro
Within the arc of Water 7, Luffy and his crew meet Kokoro for the first time. At first, the old woman’s appearance is only that of a drunk. However, as the arc progresses, Kokoro becomes a valuable side character.
While she is mostly intoxicated during the time, her personality supports Franky and the rest of the crew throughout the season. Kokoro also comes to a few of the crew member’s rescue after they are caught underwater. Thus, revealing a comical secret despite the situation.
6Chouchou
Purely because of Chouchou’s backstory, this character sits in sixth place. Chouchou is seen in the Orangetown arc of One Piece, where he is seen guarding a small pet shop for the majority of the season.
Chouchou’s goal was to guard the shop for his now-deceased owner, his loyal personality moving to many in the audience. Despite his attempt to guard the shop of his much-loved owner, Chouchou is forced during the season to watch as the shop burns down. Over the arc, he makes a connection with Luffy and the Straw Hats, his backstory moving to many.
5Jaguar D. Saul
Jaguar D Saul was a former Vice-admiral of the Marines until he founded the island of Ohara. He was seen in Nico Robin’s backstory and became a very good friend of hers over a short period of time when the buster call was announced on Ohara, Jaguar D.
Saul made a promise to Nico Robin’s mother to protect her. Because of this, he was one of the sole reasons why Robin was able to escape the island unharmed.
4Kureha
In fourth place on the list is Kureha, Choppers friend and Master. Kureha met the Straw Hats simultaneously as Chopper in the Drum Island arc. Although she is older, Kureha herself is in grey shape and holds a variety of fighting abilities.
This, paired with her knowledge of medical science, made her a substantial side character. Because she is the reason why Chopper was able to explore with Luffy and his crew, and for her unique personality, Kureha is highly underrated.
3Tashigi
While she is seen in the much-loved anime series many times, Tashigi does not get the love she deserves. Tashigi is usually paired with Smoker, the two marines making a tricky duo for the Straw Hat pirates. Luffy and Zoro both have had trouble with the two.
However, despite being a marine, Tashigi has a good moral compass. This has caused her to make repetitive decisions in favor of the Straw Hats. Because of this fact, Tashigi offers a unique dynamic to the show.
2Dadan
Sitting in second place on the list is Dadan, the woman who raised Luffy. Despite being the mother figure of Luffy’s much-loved character, Dadan does not get the recognition that she deserves. After being forced to raise Luffy and Ace by Garp, Dadan wanted absolutely nothing to do with the boys.
However, even though she held a hard exterior, her love and concern for the duo were shown multiple times throughout their childhoods and again after the Marineford arc.
1Smoker
Sitting in first place as the most Underrated character in One Piece is Commander Smoker. Higher up to Tashigi, the Commander of the Marines holds a serious and to-the-point personality.
Even though he is a marine, like Tashigi, the Commander has a high moral compass. Because of this, his character is different from most of the Marines the Straw Hats meet. His relationship with Luffy is complicated, though his character design and personality place him at the top of the list.
