And while he now enjoys life at the top of the Hollywood hierarchy, he still manages to stay humble and help anyone that needs it. One such instance happened to be when Cruise was contacted by a dear friend who needed help with his upcoming film project, and the star came up with a plan to make sure that his friend’s creation would be celebrated as it deserved to be.

While he might not have been part of this cinematic work directly, Todd Field, the director of the film, cannot state just how much he was thankful to his friend and co-worker Tom Cruise for saving In The Bedroom and securing its legacy as one of the best movies of all time, something that was proved when it was nominated for five Oscar Awards including Best Picture.

In the year 2001, the indie film was all set to release on the big screen, until tragedy struck and the distribution rights to it were acquired by Miramax, which was led by Harvey Weinstein. Apart from other acts of misdemeanors to his name, the director was also infamous for editing the films after acquiring their distribution rights. This was one of the biggest reasons why Field was so upset when the movie went to that company.
Heartbroken, the director called the Top Gun star and told him what happened, all the while trying to hold back his emotions. Cruise listened carefully, and then, came up with a plan that would save the film. Speaking to The New Yorker, he recalled the conversation:
“I was weeping in the bathroom, he [Cruise] said “You’ll beat him, but you have to do exactly what I’m going to tell you to do, step by step.’”
He advised Field to let the river flow and let Miramax release the film how they want to. Then, when the film would perform poorly, which it did as per his assumption, brag about how well the movie was received at the Sundance Film Festival, which will intrigue the public’s interest, forcing the company to release the original version eventually.
This plan worked perfectly, and thus, Cruise was able to help Field turn the original cut into a commercial and critical success.
