The long-standing rumour that Britney Spears is secretly obsessed with the late Princess Diana has finally been confirmed.
Spears, 41, often referred to as the ‘Princess of Pop’, has expressed empathy for the People’s Princess in recent years, and some fans believe the troubled Toxic hit-maker feels a special connection to the tragic British royal, who died in 1997.
The speculation was revealed to be true on Saturday when Spears posted a bizarre video on Instagram of herself dancing at home in front of a framed portrait of Diana.
Clad in a pink mini dress, sunglasses and white boots, the American musician danced suggestively to the iconic track Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper.
‘PRETTY IN PINK … TODAY,’ she wrote in the caption alongside a pink bow emoji.
Fans quickly noticed the prominent image of Diana in the background, with one Tweeting: ‘My mood today is the framed photo of Princess Diana in Britney Spears’ house.’
‘Britney Spears being a fellow Princess Diana worshipper is so real of her,’ another added.
It comes as no surprise the troubled pop-star sees a kindred spirit in Diana, whose career in the spotlight was similarly marred by intense criticism and battles with the paparazzi.
The two women also shared a famous mutual friend in Sir Elton John.
In May 2021, Spears paid a seemingly timely tribute to Diana on Instagram following renewed criticism of the BBC’s 1995 Panorama interview that is said to have exploited the late princess at a vulnerable time in her life.
‘She never wanted to be the queen,’ Britney wrote to her 29.9 million followers, alongside a classic photo of Diana.

In 2009, Vanity Fair writer Steve Dennis wrote an article about ‘The Diana-Britney Connection’ writing, ‘In many respects, these are two women whose fame consumed and defined them, and left them lost as private people within the bubble.’

Eagle-eyed fans noticed the image of Diana displayed prominently in the background, with one tweeting: ‘My mood today is the framed photo of Princess Diana in Britney Spears’ house’
‘She wanted to be the heart of the people! She was more than class… she was sheer genius down to the way she spoke to the way she mothered her children,’ she added.
‘The essence of being completely oblivious to her own power! 750 MILLION people watched her get married on TV! She will always be remembered as one of the most remarkable women to date.’
Like Diana, who was 36 when she died, Spears has also found her troubled life to be the subject of television fodder for the BBC, which released the controversial documentary The Battle For Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship weeks before Spears’ post.
Britney slammed the documentary herself as ‘hypocritical’ in a separate Instagram post at the time.
