As DC moves ahead with its plans to establish a new DCU, Warner Bros. has decided to make some release date changes for the sequel of the 2018 film. Aquaman 2, which was earlier set for a Christmas release, is not moved five days forward to December 20, 2023. The Lost Kingdom serves as a direct sequel to the 2018 film Aquaman, featuring the return of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry.

It is also expected to feature Ben Affleck’s final appearance as Batman. Although fans are excited about Momoa and Affleck’s return as their respective DC characters, the shift in its release date has put it in direct competition with other Warner Bros. and other Studios’ films.

Aquaman 2 Gets a New Release Date
After going through several schedule changes due to the global pandemic, Aquaman 2 was scheduled to release on December 25, 2023. Before its December schedule, it was set to release in March 2023, but it went through another shakeup in August last year, settling on a release date in December 2023.

However, the studio has once again rescheduled its release to put it against some of the upcoming films at the box office. Sony’s sequel to the 2021 Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Blitz Bazawule’s The Color Purple are also expected to release the same week.
Other than these, Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka is also set to release five days ahead of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Directed by Paul King, Wonka is expected to give Jason Momoa‘s sequel a tough time at the box office.

Insiders have now claimed that the Timothee Chalamet feature is already expected to be a hit. And people have started discussing how the Lost Kingdom could suffer against Timothee Chalamet’s film at the box office.

Aquaman to Go Against Wonka at the Box Office
Although Aquaman 2 is expected to get tough competition from the other films releasing in the same week, fans believe that Wonka could especially give a hard time to the DC film. Wonka, featuring Timothee Chalamet, serves as a prequel to Willy Wonka’s story.
Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka
The Dune star will be portraying a young Willy Wonka. It would share the story about how he first met the Oompa-Loompas, who then got on to work in his chocolate factory. The character has earlier been portrayed by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, and fans seem excited to see Willy Wonka’s story unfolding on screen.
Considering the film is already being received very well, people have now raised their doubts that releasing Aquaman 2 within a week of Wonka’s release might not be a good idea. A Twitter user shared their opinion, saying that they “heard nothing but good things” about Wonka and would prefer watching it instead of the Aquaman sequel.
The hype for DC films, which originated from Snyderverse, has seemingly gone down, followed by James Gunn’s plans to reboot, which allegedly affected the performance of Shazam! Fury of the Gods at the box office. And with Timothee Chalamet’s Wonka, things only seem to get more challenging for the DC film.
Wonka is expected to release on December 15, 2023.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will release on December 20, 2023.
