Blackbeard’s crew have stolen many of One Piece’s mightiest Devil Fruit powers, and now they have what they need to resurrect the former Pirate King.
SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER 1080
The fate of a Blackbeard prisoner was teased in One Piece chapter 1080, and their ability could bring The Former Pirate King back from the dead if it got into the wrong hands. With the One Piece manga expected to end within the next couple of years, many of the series’ most intriguing mysteries are unraveling. Each new chapter of the Egghead Island Arc has contained explosive reveals and increasingly higher stakes. Still, chapter 1080 detoured to Blackbeard’s base, Fullalead, aka Pirate Island, which houses dangerous characters like Captain Koby and Gecko Moria.
Despite the island being occupied by some of Blackbeard’s most powerful Devil Fruit-wielding pirates in One Piece, Koby escaped captivity. However, he received help from a fellow captive, Perona of the Thriller Bark Pirates, on the condition that he would free her captain, the holder of the Shadow-Shadow Fruit, Gecko Moria. Chapter 925 saw Moria arrive on the island to rescue his crewmate Absalom. Unfortunately, the captain failed to save his friend/crewmate, who was killed after having his invisibility devil fruit power stolen. Moria was then captured, and it seems like he will share a similar fate.
If Blackbeard Gained Moria’s Abilities, He Could Resurrect Roger
Moria is one of the unluckiest characters in One Piece‘s cast. Once regarded as a rival to Kaido, the Captain of the Thriller Bark pirates has lost several crewmates and pivotal battles in his career. That trauma resulted in Moria eating the Shadow-Shadow fruit, enabling him to control shadows that can possess the bodies of powerful dead warriors. This ability gave Moria an unkillable undead army with the hundreds of shadows he’d accumulated over many years. If Blackbeard was able to steal Moria’s Devil Fruit powers, he or someone he gives the ability to will be able to resurrect dead pirates like Roger, Whitebeard, or even Ace for their bidding.
The terrifying potential of the Shadow-Shadow fruit was displayed during The Thriller Bark arc. Moria used his powers to fight Luffy, Zoro, and the rest of the Straw Hats with the resurrected Giant, Oars, and Zoro’s direct ancestor and beloved Wano Samurai, Shimotsuki Ryuma. Using Gecko Moria’s ability requires that he extract a person’s shadow; this shadow houses the victim’s personality and fighting abilities. Suppose Blackbeard or Moria found the remains of The Former Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, or his rival Whitebeard. In that case, they’d be able to put a shadow into them. Neither character’s charming personality would be present, but it would create a powerful undead zombie version of the beloved figure. If Blackbeard does bring Gol D. Roger back, then what could make a better final fight for Luffy than against the former King of the Pirates himself?
Luffy’s Final One Piece Fight Could Be Against Gol D. Roger Himself
Series creator Eiichiro Oda loves to build suspense by not providing all the answers immediately. It’s currently unknown if Moria’s powers have been stolen yet or if he is already dead and being impersonated by Catarina Devon’s transformation abilities. Blackbeard is a gluten for sowing chaos, and resurrecting Roger to be his puppet would be a dramatic obstacle for One Piece‘s next King of the Pirates to overcome. Regardless, a battle against a Zombie Roger, a hollow shell that’d represent the former pirate king’s power, and Luffy’s adventurous spirit and enduring will is the ultimate way to show that the Worst Generation has surpassed the last in One Piece.
