One Piece finally shows the true strength of Luffy’s grandpa, Garp, and his destructive power goes beyond even the wildest imagination of fans.
Warning: SPOILERS for chapter #1080 of One PieceFans of One Piece finally got to witness the true power of Vice Admiral Garp, Luffy’s grandfather, and it exceeded even their wildest expectations. Garp is part of a group of characters whose legendary strength has been teased throughout the entire series, and it’s finally time for One Piece to show the true power of Luffy’s grandpa.
In chapter #1080 of One Piece, the story’s focus moves away from Egghead Island, where Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are engaged in a deadly game against a rogue clone of Dr. Vegapunk and the Seraphim. This chapter instead shows the fate of Captain Koby, “the hero of the Marine”, who has been captured by Blackbeard after his raid against Boa Hancock. Luffy’s grandfather Garp moved to save his protégé, recruiting Koby’s friends from SWORD, a secret branch of the Marine. The Marines attack Blackbeard’s base on Pirate Island, rounding up all the pirates and cutthroats who joined Teach’s cause in the middle of the town. Then, flying over the island on his battleship, Garp unleashes a devastating Conqueror Haki-charged punch, called Galaxy Impact, seemingly destroying the entire island.
Garp Has Conqueror Haki
Monkey D. Garp is a legendary Marine of the past generation, renowned for being one of the few true rivals of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. Not only Garp fought on par with Roger several times, according to the tales, but he also allied with the Pirate King on one occasion, during the God Valley Incident, where they defeated Rocks D. Xebec, another incredibly powerful pirate warrior. Fans of One Piece became aware of Garp’s past exploits through tales, brief flashbacks, and the admiration of his subordinates, but he was never shown to be fighting seriously in his appearances in the present of the story. One of these moments was when Garp witnessed Admiral Akainu killing his adoptive nephew Ace in front of his eyes, and almost attacked his superior before he was stopped by his friend Sengoku.
It’s clear now that, on that occasion, Garp could have really killed the powerful Akainu if he weren’t stopped. Chapter #1080 shows that Garp is one of a handful of individuals in the world who can use Haoshoku Haki (aka Conqueror’s Haki), and one of the even fewer ones who can use the advanced application of “infusing” Haoshoku Haki into parts of their body or objects, as shown by streams of black lightning emanating from his hands during the Galaxy Impact attack. Mastering Haoshoku Haki is a prerogative of the strongest fighters in One Piece history, which puts Garp at least on the same level as the likes of Shanks, Kaido, Big Mom, Roger, Whitebeard, and his own nephew Luffy.
Garp Is Among The True Elite Of The One Piece World
Garp has always been portrayed as possessing incredible physical strength and as a master of the more common form of Haki, Busoshoku (Reinforcement). However, the reveal that he has Conqueror’s Haki comes as a surprise, as this power usually belongs to individuals with extreme ambitions, known as Supreme Rulers. Garp, on the other hand, was always presented with a carefree attitude, and while he has a strong sense of justice, he also always refused to be promoted to Admiral. Still, the revelation of Garp’s true level of power must surprise even One Piece fans, and it teases a possible epic future confrontation against his nephew Luffy, who “betrayed” Garp‘s aspiration for him to become a Marine and chose to aim for the title of Pirate King instead.
