Chelsea and Bayern Munich are at loggerheads as Thomas Tuchel tries to poach highly-rated Blues coach Anthony Barry, who has reportedly been told to stay away from Blues training
Chelsea coach Anthony Barry has reportedly been told to stay away from training after being headhunted by former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel, sacked by Chelsea after a poor start to the season, was appointed by Bayern Munich last week in the wake of Julian Nagelsmann’s departure. In turn, Nagelsmann could find himself in London soon after emerging as the heavy favourite to replace Antonio Conte.
As for Tuchel, a Munich resident, he has landed a dream job which could see him add to the Champions League title he won with Chelsea in 2021, as well as the Bundesliga title.
The former PSG and Borussia Dortmund boss is wasting little time in putting his coaching team together and, according to German outlet BILD, he has earmarked Anthony Barry, who is reportedly keen to join Tuchel at the Allianz Arena after the pair worked closely together at Stamford Bridge.
A separate report by the Telegraph adds that Barry has been told to stay away from training until further notice as a compensation deal is worked out. Bayern are said to have made a financial offer to prise Barry away from west London, but that it falls well short of Chelsea’s valuation, leaving Barry in limbo.
The Blues are said to be disappointed after Tuchel went public with his plans to lure Barry to Munich in his first Bayern press conference. He said: “My coaching staff wasn’t prepared either, so a big thank you to their families for their flexibility.
“Arno Michels and Zsolt Löw, who have been working with me for over ten years, will be there. We’re hoping to add Anthony Barry, who is currently at Chelsea.”
Barry was initially brought to the club by Frank Lampard and is highly thought of by the Blues, who gave him permission to take up a dual role with Portugal earlier this month. Barry, who has also worked with Wigan Athletic and the Republic of Ireland, is regarded as a set-piece specialist.
