Raheem Sterling appeared to have grown an afro out of nowhere when he was snapped in front of Willian in 2015 – but the Chelsea star has now actually adopted the hairstyle
Chelsea star Raheem Sterling has inadvertently recreated his iconic Willian meme with his new hair-do.
Back when he was emerging onto the scene in the Premier League with Liverpool, Sterling featured in a hilarious photo which saw him and then-Blues winger Willian line up in perfect timing during a game in the 2014/15 season.
As a result, he looked like he was the one with a massive afro rather than the short style he was actually rocking. Over eight years on, the 28-year-old has now grown his hair out and emulated Willian as he made his return to training on Tuesday (March 28).
After snaps of the session were posted by the club, one fan noted: “The Raheem Sterling meme has become real.” Another echoed: “Sterling recreated this meme pic.”
“No way this meme became real,” commented a third, while a fourth wrote: “I was looking for a player behind Sterling in that second pic.”
A fifth said: “Life imitates art.” And a sixth joked: “Nahh it’s [Marc] Cucurella standing behind him.”
England international Sterling has missed Chelsea’s last two matches after scoring the winning goal against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League round-of-16 clash earlier this month.
He also missed out on Gareth Southgate’s squad for the opening two Euro 2024 qualifiers as a result, but is now back out on the grass and could be in contention for when Aston Villa come to Stamford Bridge this Saturday (April 1).
Sterling, who also suffered a hamstring injury earlier this season, took to Twitter after training and wrote: “Feels good to be back.”
