Even though Tom Cruise is regarded as one of the remaining movie stars in Hollywood who holds the ability to ensure a movie’s success by his name alone, it isn’t always the case. Although Tom Cruise’s heavy involvement in the production of his projects has mostly resulted in success, there is one exception that is widely considered the actor’s biggest failure.
Following Universal’s failed attempt at establishing a cinematic universe with the release of 2017’s The Mummy, one of the major reasons behind the failure was later reported to be Tom Cruise himself.

Tom Cruise Tom Cruise’s heavy involvement reportedly resulted in The Mummy’s failure
There are several reasons behind the failure of 2017’s The Mummy, but the biggest factor was reportedly Tom Cruise‘s desire of wanting to be the central figure in the movie. Even though the actor is known for being heavily involved with the projects he is attached to, it doesn’t always pan out well.
According to reports, Tom Cruise allegedly wanted to increase his screen time in the movie, which eventually resulted in the decrease of importance of the actual Mummy, played by Sofia Boutella. The actor allegedly took control of the entire production and made several changes to the movie, which would eventually become one of the actor’s biggest failures.
Following the failure of the movie, Brendan Fraser, who starred at the forefront of the original The Mummy trilogy, expressed his viewpoint on the failure of the Tom Cruise-led movie.

The Mummy (2017) Brendan Fraser on the failure of 2017’s The Mummy
While sharing his perspective on the idea of returning to The Mummy franchise, Oscar Winner Brendan Fraser shared his viewpoint on the failure of 2017’s The Mummy. The actor stated that the reboot lack all the ingredients that made the original movies so special and explained the importance of fun in the original trilogy, which was missing in the reboot. He said,
“It is hard to make that movie. The ingredient that we had going for our ‘Mummy,’ which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary. I know how difficult it is to pull it off.”
