Anthony Mackie returns to the MCU as Sam Wilson in the first Captain America: New World Order set photos as filming begins for the 2024 Marvel movie.
The first Captain America: New World Order set photos reveal Anthony Mackie’s Marvel Cinematic Universe return as filming begins. After starring in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ in 2021, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is set to star in the fourth Captain America set for release in May 2024. Sam Wilson’s first movie as Captain America will bring him into conflict with President Thunderbolt Ross (Harrison Ford) and The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson). Marvel Studios has otherwise kept plot details mostly under wraps regarding what brings the MCU’s new Captain America into action against these familiar foes.
Filming has officially begun on Captain America: New World Order, as Just Jared has shared the first Captain America 4 set photos featuring Anthony Mackie’s MCU return.
The series of photos show Sam Wilson in casual attire as he appears to look at a small restaurant known as Smyth’s Diner. It appears that the scene takes place in West Virginia, even though Captain America 4 is filming in Atlanta, Georgia. Anthony Mackie is the only cast member who has been spotted so far as the Phase 5 MCU movie directed by Julis Onah. Smyth’s Diner is a reference to the comics, as the location was featured in Adventures of Captain America #2 in 1991.
What Captain America 4’s Set Photos Reveal About The Movie
The Captain America 4 set photos show very little about the movie or Sam Wilson’s journey on the surface. However, it is somewhat notable to see Sam Wilson all alone in West Virginia. Anthony Mackie’s character has traditionally been featured alongside Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) or Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Since Captain America: New World Order is the first time that Sam Wilson is the lead of a solo project, the subtle emphasis put on Sam’s individual life being explored in these set photos is a nice reminder that the movie is telling his story.
Captain America 4 will also now be the first MCU project to potentially have scenes take place in West Virginia. Agents of SHIELD visited the state during season 2, but no Marvel Studios project has ever included characters visiting here. Sam stopping in West Virginia could be important, though, because of the MCU’s prominent ties to Virginia. He could be traveling through West Virginia on his way to Virginia to visit Contessa Valentina at the CIA’s headquarters in Langley or meet with President Ross at the Pentagon.
Now that Captain America 4 is filming, more set photos of Anthony Mackie could begin to circulate in the weeks and months to come. Those could be much more revealing about Sam Wilson’s journey and how he’ll interact with the movie’s multiple Hulk-related villains. In the meantime, Captain America: New World Order‘s set photos are a clear confirmation that the movie is in production and right on schedule to hit its May 2024 release date.
