Darwin Nunez was forced to withdraw from the Uruguay national team due to injury. This could make it difficult for Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
The South American striker has been a key part of manager Jurgen Klopp’s squad since he moved from Benfica for £85m in the summer. Nunez has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 20 appearances this season.
However, Nunez’s contribution to Liverpool could be affected as the Uruguay national team confirmed on social media that he had to withdraw from the team due to injury.
Although the extent of Nunez’s injury is currently unknown, Red Brigade fans are worried that he could be sidelined for a while.
Liverpool have been erratic this season and are currently sixth in the Premier League, seven points behind the Champions League spot.
Finishing the season in the Top 4 will be their only hope to qualify for Europe’s most prestigious tournament next season. The Kop were eliminated from the round of 16 of the Champions League after a 2-6 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid.
Klopp’s army will have a series of difficult matches ahead as they face Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next 3 matches.
News of Nunez’s injury comes after the Merseyside team learned that Stefan Bajcetic would miss the rest of the season with a thigh injury. They have also been without Luis Diaz since September and have struggled to maintain a steady squad.
