Liverpool were quick to notice Darwin Nunez asking Cosy Gakpo to sniff his armpit after the Dutchman broke the dead lock against Manchester United on Sunday evening
Darwin Nunez urged Cody Gakpo to smell his armpits – as the Dutchman celebrated breaking the deadlock against Manchester United.
Liverpool were in red-hot form on Sunday as they put United to the sword, netting seven times at Anfield. Nunez, who was been heavily criticised for his finishing, was on the scoresheet twice – but it was celebrating Gakpo’s goal that produced the bizarre moment.
Cameras picked up Nunez begging Gakpo to smell his armpit – and the Dutchman obliged. And Liverpool fans were quick to pick up on the strange interaction between the duo – with one telling kids not to replicate the celebration.
One fan tweeted: “Now to ask the real question, what the hell was that Gakpo/Nunez celebration, why did he sniff his armpit?”
“Nunez having Gakpo smell his armpit…definitely one of the strangest goal celebrations I’ve ever seen,” a second added. While a third tweeted: “Gonna be wondering if Nunez is ticklish or smelly after Gakpo pointed at his armpit.”
And a fourth said: “What’s Gakpo and Nunez celebration…I can’t help but laugh!”
Nunez wasn’t done with his cheeky celebrations, and he mocked Marcus Rashford’s latest celebration after he got on the scoresheet.
The Uruguayan pointed to his head – like Rashford has done in recent weeks – with a massive smile across his face. Rashford debuted the celebration at the turn of the year – and players such as Danny Welbeck, Joshua Kimmich, and Joelinton have all emulated the celebration.
